So everyone, some advice please... I'm living in Ireland at the moment working as an Architectural / Drafting Technologist. Work here as some people may be aware is hard to come by so I guess I'm lucky to be still employed although the wages are quite poor and I could be left go at any time. As a result, I'm thinking of going to the States or Canada. Any recommendations as to where I should go to attain some sort of decent work? Also, does anyone know if it's possible to arrange a job before you go or do companies generally want to see you face to face for an interview before they hire you?
If you have bim skills like Revit, parametric modeling or anything like that then you have a chance. Building science like facade design or energy systems will definitely help you stand out in the sustainable design fields. If that applies to you then you can find work somewhere in North America.
Toronto, New York City, Denver, Vancouver, San Francisco, Texas, etc. are all good places to find work with small firms or large corporations. Get in touch with somebody in these areas and ask around, you'll eventually find something. Europe can work in the right market, the middle east or east asia if you have the experience.
Phone call interviews are common, face to face can be done with skype but you have the time zone difference to deal with in any case. Just present yourself as a motivated professional and that will make a good impression.
Thanks for the info Thakopian. I think I'll send out a few tester e-mails and see what comes back. I've heard that the Irish are welcomed in North America because we're hard workers... Hopefully this is true and I should be able to get a half decent job. I, like many of my colleagues, am not afraid of hard work - our team is currently putting in an average of 60 odd hours a week on our current project (and getting paid for 37). I wouldn't mind doing similar elsewhere once I could reap the rewards. Fingers crossed!
