I am currently finishing up my undergrad degree (non-architecture) and considering pursuing a M. Arch degree in the next year or two. I would like to focus on sustainable building design and construction, however I am concerned about carrer opportunities in this area after graduation. I was hoping that some of you might be able to provide some advice for me.
Can anyone give me an idea of how difficult the job market is after completing an M. Arch program? Also, apart from practicing architecture, what kinds of careers might be available for someone with an M. Arch degree?
it all depends on how good you are... Are you the top few students in the class or just another guy who like making fancy renderings and knows how to use every software released.
You can always go work in Hollywood and create digital sets
Project management representing a client think institutions like universities housing authorities
Most towns and cities have community development or permitting departments
Architecture has many transferable skills such as problem solving, graphic design, and organization systems such as HVAC, plumbing or space requirements user needs this is called programming and there are firms that specialize in just this.
Architecture is not an assembly line type of process each building has a new site and new issues to deal with, flexibility is key and you have to be an expert generalist in all fields.
Some one once told me that if you present yourself well, others will give you a chance to shine. Instead of present ourselves as some one with a M. Arch degree, we can talk about what projects we lead, what bugdets(if any)we worked with, how many people you were in charge of(if any) what was our key role(s) were you a liasion between clients and your team? A person with a M. Arch can sell it.
Hope that helps
