They are used for highend visualization and most of the apps are running in their own OS. The Santa Fe Institute had an array of sparks to run complex mathematical algorithms, etc. Much more power than an architect modeling needs. They destroy your standard mac or pc in performance.

Back in the day (read: the 90's) they were the shit. Don't know how they've evolved since then, though.

They are all very expensive though.
yeah, what I remember them being used for is taking those animations that said they would take 5 days to render and making them more manageable.
