M.Arch Programs with Urban Focus

thenatex

I'm doing some last-ditch efforts to find some solid M.Arch programs in the U.S. (or Canada) to apply to for the Fall of 2013.  I'm well aware of the time-frame, so please save any trolling for another thread.

My interests are very broad. I'm looking for schools that are not overly focused on certain aspects of design which may overlook other equally important matters.  (I don't want a M.Arch degree in computer software and programming for example)  I am very interested in urban issues and conditions and how it is affected by architecture. I would like work to become a project architect working on large scale urban projects after finishing school.

Just over one year ago I moved to Beijing to work as an architectural designer/urban planner in a large Chinese firm.  I wanted to explore urban design and planning before I attended graduate school to see if I wished to earn a dual degree in both architecture and planning, but after my experience here, I've decided that it would be better to obtain a M.Arch which addresses urban issues and topics, and see where that leads first.  Personally I found urban planning to be a bit too nonspecific for my taste.

Overall I am looking for a strong program surrounded by many other highly motivated people who are interested in exploring all aspects of architecture. I am not afraid of parametric design, scripting, computation and digital fabrication (I can do a fair amount already) but I do not want to attend a program focused solely on this, as seems is quite popular these days.  I wish to be exposed to large and complex projects to explore new ways of problem solving and research.  I believe sustainability should not be a feature added on to a design, but an inherent basic part.

As I am still living in Beijing, I have found it difficult to explore the options of schools back home in America.  So I'm hoping some of you could share any experiences you or others you know have had with M.Arch programs in the last few years.

If you haven't already found it, check out Arizona State University. I am there now as an undergraduate, but have been involved with the students in the gradate program frequently. There are a wide range of topics to study in studio courses accompanied by travel studios to different regions of the world. Studios range in topics from health, urban design, digital fabrication, housing, and much more. Get in contact with Max Underwood specifically if you would like more information on the program. He is in charge of the Urban aspects of the graduate program. Also, he knows just about everything and anyone you could ever want to know around the world.

curious if you've found any schools that matched your interests? i'm beginning the search for similar programs and would love to hear if you've found anything worthwhile.

there was a similar question in a previous thread, someone was asking about an M.arch program that focused on computer tech. & architecture. I feel as having an M.Arch my self, it was well stated in that thread that most M.Arch programs will allow you to develop your own exploration into urban design
