Do schools care what your post-graduate interests are?

paintitblack

In writing my statement of intent, I need to discuss what my desired emphasis or specialization in architecture will be after graduation.  Do schools judge you based on what you want to do with your degree, or do they just want to see that you have some sort of passion or direction in the field?

I'm not going to pretend that I want to work for a world-renowned firm designing skyscrapers and stadiums -- I don't.  I have a very strong background in the music industry, have spent much of my time working backstage and in festival settings, so I'm more interested in architecture and lighting design, stage design, etc.  Of course I am open and flexible to other opportunities but I can't really see myself taking the traditional route. Will that be looked down upon in certain "upper tier" schools, or do they care more about your capabilities rather than your intentions?

are you interested in architecture or stage design?  cuz the latter doesn't really need archi degree, does it?  there won't be much opportunity to study such things at archi-school...

if it is architecture you want to pursue, then no it doesn't matter as long as you have compelling story to tell.

I am interested in architecture, not just stage design.  I would rather have an M. Arch and have the option to do stage design than go to a technical school and be tethered to only stage design.  I am open to a lot of possibilities in the architecture field, but I know that I would probably be most successful as it pertains the the music/event i/entertainment industry since that's what I've been doing for the past 6 years and that's what I know.  But yes, it is most definitely architecture that I want to pursue.  I'd rather know too much for a job than not enough.

I'm pretty sure they do since it kinda ties into the whole going to graduate school thing lol

Also, if you're interested in stage design, then talk about it. It'll add passion and individuality into your SOI.

For whatever it's worth, YO! Home is stage design architecture and I'm pretty sure that Simon Woodroffe spent more time making sushi than going to grad school.

Yo!

Grad school I feel is necessary because I have ZERO formal training in architecture or design.  I can't exactly go back and get a second bachelor's, so this is the only logical step in my opinion.  I know it is a huge investment, which I have already taken into account.

being able to lie in your apps about shit someone can never ever ever verify is a good life skill.

do it.

also, saying you want to do huge skyscrapers will possibly be detrimental to your app. there's a ton of really dumb people even at the best schools, who still think that boutique architecture and broad green spaces in middle america are acceptable ways of bettering the humanity, all while being completely unaware of the environmental implications of those sorts of practice. while at school, i never met anyone who was willing to admit they wanted to do high-rises. but exploring phenomenology and the picturesque, yeah, that shit will get you far.

I'd say it's very much important, even if the places your looking at aren't completely specialized in our interrest. To be honest I think it was my sotyr abut working on pro-bono design that got me into a few schools. Just give them a compelling (and true) vision of who you are.
