The Blue Jays, Tigers, Indians, Cubs, White Sox, Brewers and Twins all play in major citites in the states you listed.
garpike beat me to the Columbus, IN. There's also Calatrava's Miwaukee museum of art. I also like the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee school of architecture building.
Just keep a look out for a Tree when your crossing North Dakota....oh,,,oh I got one.....the Lawerence Welk Museum...
it will really let you know what America is all about.
I just read the thread post.....noting that the last spot zee is visiting is North Dakota.....I guess you should Zip To Zap North Dakota while your in the State Zee.....before you board your alien ship and depart from the earth.
Some of the obvious places that I will be stopping to take a look at are:
Contemporary Art Center - Zaha Hadid
UofCincinnati - Morphosis
Toledo Museum of Art - SANAA
McCormick Tribune - OMA
Pritzker Pavillion - Gehry
Crown Hall - Mies
Milwaukee Art Museum - Calatrava
What is in the Columbus'?
I'm looking for good projects that might not be as well known.
My last semesters studio project actually dealt with airstream trailers.
to expand on treekillers and lebossman posts, the cranbrook campus in its entirety is a great visit...not only works by saarinen and williams+tsien, but also an addition by stephen holl, rafael moneo, and dan hoffman...
Alfred Caldwell did a great park overlooking the Mississippi River which is called Eagles Point, in Dubuque, Iowa. It is a bit difficult to get to but well worth the visit nice place to have lunch or brunch if your brown bagging.
So where are you starting from? Sounds like a giant loop around the great lakes. I've thought about doing something similar when I visit friends in Toronto.
These are all quite new & notable buildings in Mpls all within a mile radius of downtown.
Winter Solstice Building by RoTo Architects in Antelope, SD. Off ypur path, but i speculate there aren't many pilgrimage spots for architects in North Dakota. I'm eager to hear of more myself, zee.
However, there are abandoned ICBM silos in the Dakotas you can visit. In one of the silos open to the public (google it), you can push the button and hear an audio re-creation of the ICBM launch sequence. In short, while in the Dakotas, seek out NORAD defense installations and be sure to try your hand at starting nuclear war.
in iowa: woodbury county courthouse
sullivan bank in Grinnell
holl building in iowa city
iowa state university is a great example of land grant university campus design and is very beautiful
there are some flw houses, cedar rock and the stockman house
the bridges of madison county
des moines art center
des moines public library
be sure to check out the skiiing while you are there.
I suggest downtown Detroit, drive around, or hook up with jfidler and puddles, they give great tours I am sure...it will be a good lesson in the evils of suburbia and white flight
If you're into celebrity designs built by local architecture firms, Ohio has some Gehrys, some Eisenmans, a Hadid, a Coop Himmelblau, and a SANAA (as already mentioned).
If you're into a truly unique experience drive all over Indiana. Every county seat has a unique and well-built courthouse all built around the same time. Perhaps vado could shed some more light.

If you traveling across southern Minnesota you might also want to check out National Farmer's Bank by Louis Sullivan, in Owatanna.
National Farmer's Bank AKA Wells Fargo.

Thanks....some great suggestions.
I am starting in Winnipeg and then looping around.
aquapura I have been to Minneapolis many times to see the architecture. There are some really great projects.
i talked to someone who suggested driving to both cleveland and pittsburgh. any further suggestions for those areas?
Generally in Iowa, think of Mason City as an epicentre of the Prairie School--Wright, Burley Griffin, et al...
I suggest downtown Detroit, drive around, or hook up with jfidler and puddles, they give great tours I am sure...it will be a good lesson in the evils of suburbia and white flight
