Strengthening a Portfolio

I am a senior in high school and have been seriously considering pursuing a B-Arch or related degree. I am going to Mass College of Art in the Fall of 2011 as a freshman and would like some advice on tailoring my portfolio towards architecture. My portfolio now includes still lifes of rocking chairs, mannequins, mixed media illustrations, drawings of animals and a few graphic design pieces. I plan on applying to Pratt Institute and Risd in the fall. What do you think I should include in my portfolio to these schools. What skills should I sharpen. Any ideas for drawings or useful excercises?

I am sure other members of this forum would be able to provide a better response, but I would look into putting something in your portfolio that is more technical to coincide with what you have. I am not sure when the applications are due to RISD and Pratt, but perhaps it would be possible for you to take one of Massart's beginning architecture studio's in the Fall. Look into including something where you can show the process of the design, that will showcase how you think about a design.

You are just Mr. Helpful tonight Median. I was looking into taking a summer design course at MassArt. I think it will deffinitely be beneficial to my portfolio. I'm trying to do a drawing of a building and interior space from direct observation everyday as well.

I went to MassArt for undergrad. Definitely do the summer studio if you are looking to transfer out after a year. Unless the program has changed since my time, you don't start design studios until your second year. Beyond that I'd say it is in your best interest to get involved with the sculpture department. Rick and Laura Brown are always running projects that combine architecture, sculpture and building. It is the kind of stuff that will set you apart from your peers when you apply for transfer.
