I've just accepted my admission to the post professional m.arch at upenn, which starts this fall. Processing stuff for visa application right now(I'm from India). Anyone going to upenn this fall? m.arch, ms.arch...?
I obviously have to work after graduation until i've repayed my loans, before I can start off on my own(that cud be quite a long time away)....but anyways, I'd appreciate any insights as to how bright r the job oportunities 'post' post professional m.arch frm upenn. Estimated salary figures cud be helpful. I'd look to work with design intensive practices; but corporate firms pay more, I'm sure. An avg pay that a post profn m.arch degree holder can draw wud be a good indicator. (beyond a certain range, an avg figure is useless...but for practical purposes its needed...i guess...to get a grip)
i think you will have trouble finding a job unless you get a post post post professional degree. there's a posting about it somewhere on here. you can have ten degrees but you will earn according to professional experience.
I'm a fresh Penn post-pro graduate.
First of all congrats on getting accepted. The competition for admission is getting tougher every year.
Prepare yourself for 2 semesters full of very hard work and many all-nighters.
But it's worth it!
As for job prospects, I wouldn't worry. Most of us post-pros got jobs and some got better offers than the 3 MArchs including myself as most of us have had practical experience before starting the program.
Obviously it's harder for inetrnational students, that includes myself, but it might just be a matter of time before you find one.
It all depends on your skills, portfolio and what you make out of your time here at Penn and how you spend it. There are great opportunities for Penn grads, great teachers including some very big names in the profession. And that helps a lot!
PennDesign has a career fair in March. This year we had a record number of firms coming to the fair, more than 70!! Many students got job offers.
The economy is very good now and construction is booming, as our dean, Gary Hack, said in the graduation ceremony "there is no better time to start your professional career.."
Good luck
Totally agree with you vado...it remains to be seen.
Thank you frozenmusic. What you've said is encouraging...not that I have been too apprehensive abt the job thing; I have taken into consideration the fact that things cud be difficult for intl. students. But like u said a lot wud depend on what I do at Upenn.
And yea the faculty comprises of some big names...and more importantly I really liked Dr.Detlef Mertins' approach - I had read his interview in Archinect.
I'd also really be interested to know more abt student life in upenn... interaction with faculty, design issues, housing, living costs, etc. Can i email u regarding these things?...if u don't think it'd be too much of a bother, that is. I have been goin thru the U's website, but I thought info frm ppl with 1st hand exp at upenn, like u, wud really help.
dd... I am taking it this summer at a Community college. It's about 5 weeks, online (w/ 2 in-class meetings) and i had it pre-approved by penn.
Are you asking if you "can take it this summer" for it to count? or if you "can take it this summer....at penn"?
You CAN take it this summer for it to count (get the class cleared by Penn first). If you want to take it at Penn in the summer you need to see if they offer it. Look online for a summer class schedule or call the school.
Penn approved the physic course, but i have to go to class 4 times a week / 2 hours a day / 45 mins of driving one way. It's a 3 units class, no lab. Is that going to be easy or what?
I'm going all out... just like back in Oct, Nov and Dec 2006.
I'm from northern california. PennDesign did not approve any of the physic courses at Sac State, Sac City College and UC Davis. I'm taking it at Sierra College. Other than the physic, I have to teach at UCD 3 times a week. It's going to an interesting summer. Plus... moving etc...
i'm another guy from india going to join the post-pro at upenn this fall. i had to choose this over MIT for financial reasons and i'm glad to hear about the job options as well as the academics at upenn. to answer vado retro i've got just a year and a half of professional experience (after a 5 year b.arch) and couldn't design a building independently if my life depended on it, so i'm definitely not pro. i feel i should be in a pre-pro course, but then what was my b.arch?...

Hi all.
I have a question regarding the physic requirement. I got accpeted (conditional)to the school but i haven't taken the physic class.
Do you think I can take it this summer? Upenn is my only hope... what is going to happen? any experts?
Thanks a lot.
are any of the post pro's actually pro's?

Online course? dude, that's going to be easy.

dd....not sure where you live, but the the online class is physics 10 at Pasadena City College.
It starts the 18th- maybe you can still sign up? It might be easier than commuting 4 days a week.

by the way, that class is also called Physics 10 - basic conecpts in physics
