Unconventional Building Material - Experimental Design Studio

Ali Saad

Imagine if you get to have a site on an island, composed of Alluvial clay, no trees in sight, only grass and reeds are growing vegetation, strong winds from N-S, extreme temperature variation in summers, winters and monsoon season.

( when entire Island merges into water 12'-24'' deep for 2 days )

And you have just got two boats 12 ' x 3 ' each, for transporting building material to Island.

Prime Objective : Designing an undersized living, working and storage space for a couple, who aim to spend 7 long days in every 3 seasons of the year.

Site Edge Dimensions : 20' x 10' ( Area : 200-sqf )

You cant implant something heavy, your surface will have settlement, anything weightless may fly apart opposing winds, and you can't use CONVENTIONAL MEDIUMS like ( wood, bamboo, aluminium, steel, concrete etc. )

Remember not to forget the limit of weight once carrying stuff through boats !!!

And the ultimate design is to function as a sustainable intelligent design in one way or the other. Its a small experimental studio we're exerting with. Hope to hear from you all.

Any innovative suggestion would be appreciated.

was this started by larry ellison?  sounds like someone can afford to buy an island but would never stoop so low as to pay an architect.

sorry, sometimes there is lots of cynicism around here.  i also like wood and concrete as building materials in residential construction.  you left fypon in as an option, but not dimensioned lumber...
