Laptop Recommendations

Archi49

Hey, I am an architecture student and my school requires me to get a laptop. They suggest the Dell Precision M4700 or a MacBook Pro. I really do not like the look/feel of the Dell (too bulky, weighs too much) and do not feel like spending $2000 for something I do not really like. I do not know about running bootcamp on the Mac.

Does anyone have any suggestions of laptops I can use that are comparable and maybe cheaper? I need to run:

-Rhino

-AutoCAD

-Adobe Creative

-3DS

-Revit

-Ecotect

What laptop do/did you use at your school?

I use a MacBook Pro and so do several others at my program. Even though I like it, I would recommend you get a PC for the programs you listed. You'll save some money and running bootcamp is kind of a pain. You need to restart the computer every time you want to switch OS. You can get Parallels to allow you to run both OS simultaneously but it cuts the processing speed in half which makes rendering times longer.

agree with what dawnchorus said... I currently use an HP Elitebook 8530w that I got 4 years ago, 8GB RAM etc.. Its comparable to Dells M4700 series but much smaller, sleeker looking.  A week ago I borrowed a friends new MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM and lot of new features to do a video rendering on Adobe Premiere.  It was sooo damn slow when trying to run PC software through Parallels.

so yeah, get a PC laptop.. check out HP's or Dell's business models.. They usually tend to be work horses compared to consumer models.

Load up on the RAM (16GBs or so), faster processing speed (get Quadcore processors.. you don't need the latest and fastest available because the price is usually ridiculous because its new.. get one or two below the best), and research the video/graphics card (see what is compatible with the softwares you use.. a videocard made for gaming is not necessarily good for cg/video work)
