Withdrawing from a class here or there won't matter at all. Doing it every semester might raise some eyebrows. Some schools also differentiate between "withdraw passing" and "withdraw failing" (meaning your work to date in the class was getting you F's). Having multiple WF's could potentially count against you.

I withdrew entirely from school last fall for medical reasons, then applied and was accepted to a different school. It wasn't a problem at all in my case. I think that if you have a reasonable record and, if asked, can explain why you needed to withdraw that you'll be fine.

I've been wondering about that too.

I already have my bachelor's and have been taking art and design classes for mainly for my portfolio. I was taking a full load of classes at the beginning of the spring term but dropped them all except for one (which was the only one I needed to fulfill M.Arch. prereqs) also for financial reasons. I was accepted to UPenn in March and already submitted my deposit. Now I'm worried that Penn will reconsider when they get my updated transcript and see that I withdrew from so many classes this last semester.

Any opinions or speculation on this? Do you think/know if a school (specifically, Penn) would take a spot away?

i dont think transcripts matter that much for arch schools anyway.....i have an average gpa and did horrible on my gre, but managed to get in to some good grad schools, just worry about your letters of rec and portfolio and loi, these are what reflect who you are as a student above all else, i wouldnt give withdrawing from a class a second thought in this regard, actually, i doubt arch schools would even look at it. and mention the fact that you are balancing work, marriage, and school in your loi....i commend you for that by way, not everyone can manage that.

I had health issues a few semesters and dropped everything but studio...it did not hurt me at all...and more than likely helped as I was able to do the work required in studio as opposed to struggling to get anything done.

you definitely want a WP and not a WF.

At my school there were Official Withdraws (Ws) where you did the paperwork to withdraw decently before finals, and Unofficial Withdraws with just meant that you either skipped so many courses the teacher dropped you, or you didn't take the final, or both (UWs). UWs computed into your GPA as a 0.0, W's didn't count towards your GPA. I had three W's on my transcripts, and they were no problem. But then again they were never important classes either.

I got 2 W's in my undergraduate career and still got into 4 out the 6 grad schools I applied to... yeah I think they care more about portfolio than anything else.

would it be a good idea to send an explanatory letter along with my final transcript? or would it be better to wait and see if it's even a problem? any thoughts will be appreciated.
