so i am taking some time off work to take a short vacation to barcelona and i was hoping to get some insight on sites to visit, places to eat or stores to shop at within the city.
i have four full days to spend wandering the city. i am staying near plaza espanya (barcelona pavilion) for several nights and right by plaça catalunya for the last night.
on the itinerary are the following (i prob wont get to all of them):
sagrada familia
casa & parc guell
barcelona pavilion
MACBA
las ramblas + barceloneta
forum building by h&deM
miro & picasso museums
casa mila
torre agbar
restaurant recommendations? cheap eats? good design stores?
i suggest scrolling down on the main discussion page and typing 'barcelona' into the box. barcelona has been discussed at length.
i would also like to add two rad place to eat. ione is called 'foodball' and it's in front of the macba. i think it's called calle de elisabets. check out another fancy pizza joint called 'veronic' in plaza de george orwell. both are in el barrio gotico.
Near the Forum you should check out the Eric Miralles Park and the Barcelona Convention Center...waterfront in that area is interesting, check out the Pont del Fòrum i Edifici de Serveis and Parque de los Auditorios. I would not skip the Barcelona Pavilion and from there you can walk up to the Miro Museum while seeing some amzing views of the city. Skip Gaudi's Park since it is well out of the way and I would also check out Miralles' market.
Resturants and bars:
Quatre Cats (kind of expensive)
El Japones
Tragaluz
Champaneria
Cuatro Puertas
Tapa Tapa
Design Stores:
Actar bookstore near MACBA and Architecture Center/School near Miralles market has a great bookstore in the cellar, alot of back issues of El Croquis.
One kind of awesome thing I did a few years ago was to break into the Archery Grounds done by Miralles and Carme Pinos. It's up on a hill west of the city. At the time it was shut down and fenced off. Don't know if it's still abandoned, but some of the details are beautiful.
A security guard who I thought was going to throw me in jail even helped me get into some of the locked back rooms.
if you have time, get out of barcelona and head to girona/olot and check out the work of RCR arquitectos. it'll take a day to see a few projects, though.
Additionally, check out the work of carlos ferrater. he's got a sweet office
I think you have a pretty good itinerary for four days. if you are interested in gaudi work, make sure you check out casa batlio and casa mila where the top floor is a gaudi museum. And i am not sure if palau guell is open yet, it has been under renovation for a long time.
girona is nice but not sure if you have that day to spend in your schedule. mallorca would be a bit far stretch for a four day trip. it's nice to just wander around the bari gotic area. cathedral is actually pretty nice.
If you are there on a Sunday, you must, absolutely most, see the Catalonians dance the Sardana in front of the catherdral. It is absolutely beautiful. They have a full band come and play while hundreds of proud Catalonians (mostly 70+ years and older) dance away.
hundreds of proud Catalonians (mostly 70+ years and older) dance away.
lol.. c'mon, let's leave it in "mostly 45+".. there's some youngsters there but not much really.. the Sardana is pure folklorism, it's beautiful but, IMHO, not that exciting.
Check out Santa Maria del Mar, it's another gothic curch in the bari gotic, I liked it better than the cathdral. Really simple and beautiful.
Casa Gull's closed util 2010 while they're renovating it, but take a walk up the Passeig de Gracia and you'll see Casa Mila and Casa Batllo about three blocks apart. Sagrada Familia's kind of a longer walk, you might want to take the metro out there. Park Guell will also require a metro ride.
Back in the bari gotic there's also the Palace of Catalan Music by Gaudi's buddy and Luis Domenech i Montaner. You have to get a ticket at least a day or two in advance but it's worth it.

I just read an article in an old Dwell magazine about FOODBALL..looks like a neat concept
Check out the Olympic stadiums. When I was there they were abandoned and all fenced off which was sort of cool
I was there on opening day because my studio was a block away. It's a great, great establishment.
They only hire hippies. Spanish hippies. It's funny.
Check out their website, it's pretty fun:
http://www.camper.com/web/en/foodball.asp
i didnt realize that camper owner foodball
they have the really cool Ingo Maurer lamps in all of their stores

Take a trip to Mallorca, well worth it, quick plane ride. Rent a snazzy convertible and drive the coast.
