I started a prep program this semester for entry into an M.Arch. It's a great program but I think I bombed on my first project and missed the second day of class. I want to regroup and scale back my hours at work to really focus on this program. I am still commited to it, but was wondering if in most architecture classes it is hard to catch up after missing the second day of class and doing a mediocre first design out of balsawood? I emalied the prof asking for the next assignment and what I need to do to catch up.
Would it be difficult or feasable? Or should I just start throwing in the towel. Please no sardonic quips, the stress is piling on at work and now school. I just want sound advice from well meaning people.
In the school I went to, we had students from Japan and Russia who come in 1 - 2 weeks late then pour it on and catch up - sure they called into the little "green room" and threatened to be put down but they made it.
My problem was a mix of arrogance, time mismanagement and procrastination. So my first designlooked like a bad seventh grade art project vs, everyone's nicley minted ones by comparison. It was pretty embarassing. But I am sucking it up and have too much of a passion for this field to quit.
I just horribly misjudged the difficulty this path will be.
My arch professor seems really nice but I've only know him two days. Do most arch professors let students sink? I know this is not a hold your hand type of field, especially the program that I am in, but I am at least hoping for some feedback.
Xenakis, two weeks? good lord, I am sweating over missing one day! How on earth did those two catch up in two weeks?
The only thing I am fretting about is if the project designs follow a pattern, like a continuation of the last design but adding or attaching on new things? Or if a whole new design is called with each new thing learned?
The only thing I am afraid of is that I missed the second day of class where another project was assigned. I am frantically emailing my prof to let me in on the assignment and hoping that I get it regardless of the fact that I wasn't there in person to understand what he wanted. Hopefully he can convey the same meaning in an email that he did in class.
This is what I am really afraid of with getting behind. Other than that I can suck up a bombed first project.
If I missed a second meeting with a potential client, I would guarantee that I would not be hired for the job. If you knew you were going to miss, why weren't you proactive about it. Break those bad habits. Plan ahead. Most important part of schedule recovery.
thanks for the advice and I agree with you 100% but I am not selling anyone anything. I am in school learning a very difficult field that is going to challenge me beyond anything that I've done before. I missed class, so now I have to be proactive in order to start catching up with everyone else.
yo(?!), the kitten is cute, but will nibble on the balsawood modell when awake, so no help.
manover, you`re killing me. But your determination somehow growns on me :-)
Now stop emailing your prof ""frantically". That sounds like stalking.
Then keep your head up.
Did you already grab any books to cover the basic rookie demands?
Ching for starters?
It is soooooo refreshing to hear that you want to climb that mountain peak, as one who has been there, it is a thrill .....but, maybe you may want to reconsider your career path, and enjoy doing cartoon work....it is many experiences more enjoyable to draw looney tones, classic mickey and felix...then to listen to "teachers" tell you what architecture is in their egoistical opinions....
generally, as long as you are proactive and work hard to catch up, you should be fine. However, it is true that it is very, very hard to simultaneously work & pursue and arch. degree. If your financial planning will require you to continue to work during your Master's, you may want to re-think your planning.
It will be very difficult to hold down a part time job while pursuing your Masters. I can't actually think of a single person in my aquaintance who was able to do this (barring a TA-ship, of course. That you can do.)
Catching up still possible?

learn to meditate and you won't have stress

Wow. That's encouraging. Thanks!

bombing a one day exercise isn't that big of a deal, just work hard and learn from your mistakes

Here, have a kitten.
Feel better now?
Yo!

thanks guys, The kitten is cute. And I apologize for the poor word usage. I didn't email him several times, just once in a haste.
Would it be difficult to learn sketchup basics in two days? there was only one class on it so I am assuming I can get caught up, no?
Sketchup is pretty easy. Don't waste money on a book - there are tons of video tutorials online.
Check smustard for plug-ins when you get the basic commands down.

Cartoons? Don't really know where you're going with that but are you saying that you chose animation as a career path instead of architecture?

Excellent, Thanks Bob. So I could take time this weekend to watch some tutorial videos and learn the basics before Monday?

That's what I am finding and plan to scale back my hours at work. Then for the M.Arch just completely hold down a part time job.

Really? Well then I will have to do just that; be a full time student.
Less time on archinect, you! More time doing school work!
Thanks for the help guys but there is a huge question I need answered in another thread. It's about prep school.
