Philadelphia Firms

Hi Folks,

In a few weeks will be graduation and after that, the big move. We've decided on Philadelphia and if all goes well will be headed there sometime in July. After scouring through previous threads, talking/emailing to folks, I've put together a preliminary list of places I'll be researching for potential employment. I'd really appreciate any specific insight you might have on these firms. Please feel free to add additional firm names I've overlooked.

Thanks!

Phila U. AIAS is having a firm visit to Kieran TImberlake today. I'll be sure to ask them some questions for you... we visited and met Bob and Denise a few months ago. I post in full (hopefully with pictures) when I get back (sometime around 4pm EST)

KTA and VSBA would both be top prospects. I heard a great lecture on KTA's Loblolly House while at Forum in Boston this year, and who wouldn't want to work for Bob and Denise?

I can only talk about the two firms that I've experienced. I emphasize this because my experience may differ from yours.

I'll start with KieranTimberlake because it's more fresh.

The aesthetic of the firm is fantasic. Open spaces, no cubicals. Although I was sort of discouraged that Jason, who was giving us the tour, told us that our visit was more of a monologue than dialogue. We were able to ask questions (so it turned into a dialogue) but it was discouraging at first. Sort of a "this is what we are, take it or leave it".

That being said, I began to warm up to the firm when Jason talked about the loads of analysis that they do to understand the site and formulate their designs. KieranTimberlake really puts stress on continuing education while at the firm.

They also said that there really aren't that many people over 35. So it's a young firm.
Most of their employees have masters degrees and are specialists in areas additional to architecture.
The firm is a medium sized one with about 50 employees.

Projects range in size from single family homes to academic establishments (not as big as stadiums).
They have a 3D printer (which they say is sort of a pain)
They use Rhino to render
They have a materials library
They have a shop (to make full scale pieces of buildings)
They have a shower.
Located in center city near the Philadelphia Art Museum.

Venturi Scott Brown Associates
If you don't believe in the teachings of Bob and Denise than this isn't the place for you. They feel like they've formulated their success and so they sort of just reproduce their concepts (thats from an architect who works there). This is a cubicle environment. Venturi has something against KieranTimberlake because a lot of the workers left Venturi to work for KieranTimberlake (that's also from that architect). So I wouldn't mention KieranTimberlake around Venturi haha. It's a firm that's smaller in size (compared to KieranTimberlake) but honestly, who wouldn't love to say that they worked for Venturi. p.s. they're looking for interns.
They have a shower.
Located in Manayunk.
