This country thrives on mental health...or should I say "The act of seaming Mental"it is a germinating force that dictates itself through media as well as entertainment. It is a engaging commodity amongst main stream culture. Whether it is a show about being a JACKASS or a Drama KING/QUEEN looking for love . Having this type of behavior brought to the spot light because it has a market value it only starts broadening the pallet of what is considered"The Norm" for main stream culture . So being able to distinguish mental health these days (on the surface) with so much acceptance or the notion of what your parents tell other parents...... " thats just what kids are doing today"..... coupled with the attitude of...." I am in my own world and I am to busy doing my own shit to care about you"....I would think amongst schools and social settings mental health would be vary hard to detect on the surface. Unless there is some one who actually cares intervenes...Like a friend??? They said this individual slipped through the cracks ...I say thats bullshit no one cared. No one took the time to find out who this rogue individual was. Every one was to busy with there own stuff. I can not believe after the incident at Columbine that nothing has been set up at learning institutions to try and early detect these instances. I know even with something set up there still runs the chance of something happening again . At least the institution can say "hey we tried."
Now lets see if some of the victims parents try and put the school through litigation, this could get really big. Only after a lot of money has been lost something will happen.
As far as doing something about it. A person who has a mental problem and does not want to deal with it, will not get help for them selves....that is just how it is. At that point it is up to the surrounding individuals to act accordingly. I think a simple structure can be set up where certain actions or signs can be looked at as a sign or a warning for someone to step in an intervene. Just as there is a structure for evaluating students with academic standings that may be endanger of flunking out of school. Some thing can be set up where the students would report the progress of the individual that is under observation to a branch of the student body that would be delegated to deal with such matters. It would be every persons responsibility at the institution to be on the look out for these signs, it would be a mandatory effort of responsibility...I think it would be better digested as a way of keeping each other safe as if your classmates and staff where extended family....and you actulay care about them.
I really think carrying and compassion needs to be re introduced to schools and the work place in order to try and stop something like this to happen again.
I occasionally read my alma mater's newspaper online (when the boredom becomes critical), and what do I see in today's Daily Trojan? A loner student found with drugs and guns after threatening two women at a party. Fortunately, he's being held without bail. If the Virginia Tech shootings hadn't happened, I'd bet he'd be out on bail right now.
