So i am in a small office but everyday it is REALLY quiet in here. Nobody talks to each other much unless its project related. The only noise is the clicking of keyboards and mice and the boring classical on the radio.
i used to work in an office like that... there were 7 of us in there...
it was horrible... i was going insane working there and would be out the door at 4:59 everyday in fear that i couldnt survive one more min.
Typically it was dead queit but for the sound of people playing spider solitaire, the occasional drawing being printed and the loud crunch of our boss chomping granny smith apples
i worked in an office while in school where it was just my boss (the architect), his wife (the office manager), and myself (the cad/photoshop monkey). it was kind of fun working one on one with my boss, but @ the same time, sometimes it'd get really boring. there was no one to talk to @ times!
where i am now, there's my boss, her assistant, my two co-workers and myself (although we are part of the school's larger system). it's a small office, but we still manage to have some fun. we shoot the bullshit, talk about stuff other than architecture, etc.
where you are sounds pretty boring! dude, you should strike up a conversation on a completely random subject!
yeah...but i got my head phones...listen to kevin and bean in the morning....frosty-heidi-frank mid day....and john and ken for afternoons. its just funny when i take them off how silent it is.
A few months ago, I got to hear a detailed conversation between he and his doctor about the microscope they were putting up his penis. I can't look at the guy the same anymore.
No really most days I'm all alone with my boss running in once a day (sometimes). I talk to myself most days; sad thing is I got into a fight with myself earlier in the week and would rather just ignore me for a while.
On a plus note I get to play any kind of music I like and if it's a real good song and I can get up and dance.
im actually pretty lucky now... theres a constant mumble of voices and we are pretty chatty... most of the time there will be pretty constant conversation though almost exclusively project related... i actually put on headphones sometimes to help me concentrate; prevent me from getting distracted by whats going on in the office
usually people talking all over the place.. . printers and copiers making machine noises, rain hitting the windows, chatter of keyboards, someone cutting something loudly, plu s the metal in my headphones
i was in the doctors office the other day, it was scary quiet, pins were dropping . . . i heard them. i asked the secretary if it was normally this quiet and she said yes with a concerned expression. i told her they should listen to metal.
How can you do 9+ hours of work with no music or worse listening to someone elses crappy idea of music. I barely made it 6 months at one firm cause the guy who controlled the music would play Fish for about 5 hours a day. I now absolutely hate Fish.
Holy crap, I don't envy you guys. I work in a large firm with an "open office." There's always noise. People talking about projects, gossip, clicking of keyboards, shuffling papers, doors shutting, whatever. Wouldn't want it any other way. On weekends when nobody is here it's just creepy. Every little creak and groan of the building freaks me out.
theres about 30 people in my office, so there is always something different going on. its a lot of fun actually. People are always talking, and its only project related if it needs to be. BS'ing from time to time is quite nice, and breaks up the day. Someone is always talking on the phone too. my boss sits right across from me and he has his cell phone ring tone set to excruciatingly loud and annoying. sometimes i wonder how things get done around here....I actually like it those days when a lot of poeple are out so i can actually get something accomplished....ie surfing archinect without someone breathing down my neck!
aquapura - that's how my office is too. except i'll add the constant noise of rubber bands being flicked and the foosball table. that's how we roll in this open office.
the nice thing about it being so quiet is that i can hear someone coming and can click on whatever project i have running in the background to hide the archinect screen.
we have this southern type person in our office who talks WAY to much and can't pronounce things very well... we have to keep an eye on him from time to time
a very quiet office with the exception of the phone ringing and talking; that is until the afternoon. It gets better music starts playing to keep us awake from the drain caused by the daily site visits during lunch
I work in a truss plant, and the phone rings fairly regularly, and EVERY phone in the office rings at the same time, but has a distinctive ring tone on the off chance that someone should dial a specific extension. There's also the various loud noises of the assembly line, which includes beating hammers, large rolling machines droning, a lot of Spanish being yelled across the shop floor. We are kind of isolated up in the design/engineering office, but the door opens constantly, so it almost feels like we are on the floor sometimes. With all the buzz, though, conversation is oddly minimal.
We have this one dude at my office that watches porn during day time hours...and he does not have a cubicle or a an office just a desk...what's up wit that??? Maybe you can help me understand this EastCoastArch03...
Oh yeah I just remember how we have this one girl in our office who complains about AutoCad and praises Vector Works...then manages to break her computer like everyday.
My office is near silent today, but if I could only get Brad to put his shirt back on while he builds that model I'd actually be able to have a work-related conversation.
its extremely quiet except for me. Somehow I end up talking the entire day about things I never wanted to talk about ever - and do this all day. I am the office radioH.
how quiet is your office?
So i am in a small office but everyday it is REALLY quiet in here. Nobody talks to each other much unless its project related. The only noise is the clicking of keyboards and mice and the boring classical on the radio.
What are your offices like?

Sounds about like yours, only we don't even get classical radio.

and now, an actual response to your question!

My receptionist is a heavy breather, and the guy next cube over conducts all of his calls on speakerphone... even personal calls to the doctor.

yeah...but i got my head phones...listen to kevin and bean in the morning....frosty-heidi-frank mid day....and john and ken for afternoons. its just funny when i take them off how silent it is.

A few months ago, I got to hear a detailed conversation between he and his doctor about the microscope they were putting up his penis. I can't look at the guy the same anymore.
omg dude, are you serious!?
a microscope up the penis... shudder... =\
HAHAHAHA......thats gross but at the same time really funny.
I wouldn't kid about something like that.
I'm all alone......:(
No really most days I'm all alone with my boss running in once a day (sometimes). I talk to myself most days; sad thing is I got into a fight with myself earlier in the week and would rather just ignore me for a while.

that's just... echh... makes me actually shiver thinking about it...
what's funny is upon first read, i thought you typed "microphone"!!!
im actually pretty lucky now... theres a constant mumble of voices and we are pretty chatty... most of the time there will be pretty constant conversation though almost exclusively project related... i actually put on headphones sometimes to help me concentrate; prevent me from getting distracted by whats going on in the office
i love playing drums with the exacto knife and the scale...
a microphone?? now that would really hurt.

Sorry it took a while to respond. I just made an ass of myself dancing to Avril Lavigne's new video "girlfriend"
Good thing you're leaving that office.
How can you do 9+ hours of work with no music or worse listening to someone elses crappy idea of music. I barely made it 6 months at one firm cause the guy who controlled the music would play Fish for about 5 hours a day. I now absolutely hate Fish.
