I am going to study at the American University in Rome this fall and get a B. in Italian Communications after I would like to attend a design school in Italy to get my M in Architecture. I was recommened the IUAV by my uncle, does anyone else no if this is a good school? Can you recommend other schools in Italy?
To my knowledge, you'll need to start from scratch; meaning a five-year Architecture programme. You will need a good score on an admissions test to get accepted, but as extra-communitari(non-EU) you will most likely have it much easier than if you were to compete with Italians. Check out this site for information on the test.
I've heard good things about Ferrara. Politecnico di Milano is probably better known, but more chaotic and crowded. I've also heard that IUAV is one of the better architecture schools in Italy, and of course it is Venice...
There are some expensive, private design schools in Italy, particularly in the north, but they only offer courses in interior design etc, none that I know of have courses leading to a Laurea Specialistica(Master) in Architecture.
Another school to perhaps consider is the the university in Mendirisio(Switzerland), somewhat unorganised by Swiss standards, but probably much better funded than italian schools.
I've done my degree at IUAV - it was before the changes, though, meaning it was a 5 year course corresponding to a masters degree in US. They have a 3+2 structure now (3 year BA + 2 yr masters), but I am not sure what the entry requirements are. Bear in mind that it is not very common (across continental europe) to change from field to another from BA to masters (or to PhD). It might be that they ask you to start afresh as olez was saying if you do not have an arch background.
I'd say you would need to check their webpage for courses offered and possibly contact a professor in charge immediately for info.

I don't know that much about IUAV in general, but I studied abroad in Venice for four months last year and I heard a number of good things about the school from my Venetian professors. It seems to be quite well respected within the area at least from what I could gather.
Also Venice = AMAZING. Studying there is simply amazing and a wonderful opportunity for architecture students.
ALL I REMEMBER ABOUT THAT PLACE IS THAT THEY THROW SOME KICK ASS PARTIES IN THE SQUARE - THEY SERVE BEER AND WINE AT THE CONSESSION STAND IN THE SQUARE, CARLO SCARPA ONCE TOUGHT THERE, AND THE ENTRANCE TO THE COLLEGE IS KICK ASS...DESIGNED BY SCARPA - VENICE ROCKS!!!

Carlo Scarpa also re-designed their library, its quite lovely (I am not entirely sure if that library is sole-ly for IUAV but it is really nice.
