During the summer of 1979, I worked in Savannah, Georgia for H.A.B.S, the Historic American Building Survey. As part of a team of hired architecture students, I measured and drew the plans of many homes within Savannah's Victorian District, which was then a somewhat decrepit neighborhood of Victorian homes, rentals populated by mostly poor African-Americans. After our survey (which most times meant going through occupied residences), the homes were to be renovated (with Federal money; remember Carter was then President), but the population was not to be displaced, rather moved into another renovated home (that is until the Federal subsidies were no longer available).
One of the last houses on my 'to do' list was a twin with four living units [across the street from the old grade school, now a SCAD building]. Permission to get into all but one upstairs unit was easy; a wife was always home in this last unit, but the husband would only allow us (me and another student) in if he was there to. Finally, one day after he got home from work, we were let in. I didn't really like the looks the husband and wife were giving us, but you kind of got used to that after spending a summer walking through every inch of other's people's habitats. We started in the back of the unit and worked forward, and then we got a shock when we entered the living room, where he was sitting on the floor while she picked dirt out of his hair; the FLINTSTONES was on TV. On the floor around the entire perimeter of the room were pretty nasty porn magazines laid neatly side by side; around the perimeter of the room is exactly where we had to go to take measurments. Job accomplished, albeit on tip toe. The next room, in front of the stairhall (what used to be called the trunk room because that's where Victorians kept their trunks) was full of a rather extensive collection of rifles. I took one look and said to my partner, "The rest of this place has exactly the same measurments as the unit next door."
Mdler, I care. I am about 9 hours from Savannah but I care, damnit.
This is what you should do. You should find yourself an automobile and go take a nice little drive to Brunswick, Georgia about an hour away next to the beach. You are going to drive to the middle of the woods and come upon a little hippie utopia. It's essentially a hippie commune that runs a hostel. in. the. forest. And by hostel, I mean treehouses
Yes, their lodging is a conglomeration of treehouses in the middle of the woodsthat overlooks their little lake. It's amazing. The people are amazing. The food is amazing. Their sustainable lifestyle is amazing. And there little bungalows in the trees are an interesting alternative to the cheap beach hotels nearby.
n_, what the hell is this hippie commune you're talking about? I grew up in Brunswick and I've only known it to be a nasty, dirty, stinking town of rednecks and humidity and sprawling roads to connect one strip mall to another to some ugly apartments.
But, can you tell me how to get to that place? I know of a little hippie commune type place downtown of religious fanatics who run the best bakery on the planet. But I don't know of any treehouses by a lake...
electro-magnetic imagination, I live in that building! It isn't even remotely Victorian, though. Mmmm. Porn and Flinstones.
mdler, you should for sure go to The Crystal Beer Parlor. But only if it's a Friday night. They've got the most charming old live jazz music on Fridays. I'd show you around the town, but my boyfriend is staying with me that weekend (rather, this weekend) and probably wouldn't be keen on the idea of my meeting dudes from the internet during the limited time he and I have together. I hope you have fun though! If you have any questions about where to go and what to see... just ask. :)
Aesthete, I'm from Brunswick as well. Well, technically St. Simons, but that was back when an average family could still aford to live over there. You ever work at any of the firms down there?
APPLESEED will be going from Santa Monica, CA to downtown Los Angeles, CA, sometime between now and 2AM. If any 'nectors are down to meet, send an email ASAP.
Oh, Mdler! You must go to Zunzi's and drink some effing African tea. It tastes like a rainforest or an island or a rainbow or something. And eat whatever they suggest to you. It's on Drayton with rainbow umbrellas outside. Your brother might know where it is.
sucks that i just noticed this thread on the 4th BUT did you happen to notice the moshe safdie art museum in the middle of old historic savannah? it's rather brilliant.

I went there a few years ago and had the time of my life. And it's so close to Savannah.

I dun get why people are so self-obsessed.

If you get shot, you've gone too far.

I havent been in it... Savannah is a beautiful city, however. And SCAD is by far the best art school in the country
"by far"?
I'd argue it's Art Center. But. I'd also argue it depends on your focus.
not really...I would argue against Art Center...
SCAD does have an AMAZING film program...
