i finished up a design/build project i did last summer.... was a small screen porch project..... had to caulk a few things last weekend.... used bronzed tinted roof panels and stained wood/etc.....237am.com in the exteriors section.........
i was gonna remove the rail and put it inside or redesign a new one but the budget was low and they were trying to get me to do "free" stuff..... so i finished the porch and told them that i can continue at a later date.....
I agree re: the existing rail. Hopefully the budget will grow in the future. Also, something should be done about the rail in front of the second story doorwalls. What type of track did you use for the door? The only thing that hurts this project is the deck that was already there.
kudos cryzko. I too agree with Cris on the jealousy factor! :)
Although I have to ask, why the grain/stain of the wood (soo soo dark - not my particular taste, unless there is some contrasting shades on the ext. bldg) <-- just a side note.
the stain doesn't bother me; it seems to match the existing house. but gotta agree with everyone else about the rail. i just want to rip it off. do you even need it? it technicallly is "enclosed." try taking that to your local code official.
the spans of the panels were based from the doorwalls... they actually different sizes also.... they were around 3'10"ish +/-... and 9' long..... i used that inner lateral supports to help to support the roof panels for deflection.......
stain.... i was gonna go a lighter stain but they said they were going to restain/clean the porch at a later date and like the darker look
the side louvers were to block the view from the neighbors....
i used a track from mcmasters and fabricated my connection for the track.... used a corner brace and welded a bolt through to connect to the wheel/bracket for the track
they wanted the rail up since they have grand kids and were afraid of them falling through the screen........
cost wise, the panels set me back a nice chunk of change......
the panels were also designed to slide out for winter storage so i set them in an aluminum channel with weather stripping and used a small block/bracket to keep them in place...... idea was also to slide the panels a little and use a ladder/hose to clean off the top.....well, the lazy client decided to say "hey, just make them permanent".... so all that work/detailing for nothing
and i like to do cool work but really no market in the detroit area.... so i'm really thinking about leaving this summer.......cali...l.a. area..... i like detroit but it's really getting to me.....
loving the wee project... I"m not as disturbed by the stain or the railing like the others.
I am however taken by the proportions of the screen divider and the railing height...seems like there was an opportunity to let break it in 3 bands equally spaced (at least visually)
also that exposed bolt disturbs me. Only because the connectors seem contained and almost hidden everywhere else and i imagine it being counter sunk with a dowel head finished to match.
BUt I must say this, important to anyone working or intending to work on their own. Cryz you've made what could be viewed as a mundane job into a work of art with those fine (read attention to) detail
the project was in the burbs.... i stay at 8mile and woodward......
not much going on in detroit/michigan with all the automotive industries closing/etc..... and the manufacturing moving south........ plus detroit is on it's way downhill faster than before.... they just closed another 34 schools in the city and plan on 10 more by the summer....wtf.... they already closed a shit load last year........ the thing that gets me is that there are 3 casinoes that was approved to help raise tax money for the schools...well, the casinoes are building large structures now and permanent buildings but yet schools are closing...i really dont get it at all here....... shit works backwards..............i think they are trying ti make downtown a tourist attraction or something...... but the rest of the city is suffering big time....
pixel... i wish i could hire some people..... but i barely make it myself... i dont have the resources to expand and get that finacial boost.........
i also have a showcase setup that i did and waiting for a few finished pics for that too......
all i want is a full shop with some employess...haha..... and enough work to stay busy and create cool items
without turning this into a what's-up-with-detroit-thread, the school closings were a difficult, but necessary next step for the dps. frankly, i wish they'd pare it down further and put their time and money into the schools that have a chance of making it. that's not much consolation to the parents of the kid's in the schools that closed, but ultimately i hope it will make the public schools stronger.
everyone around here seems to think the sky is falling. i don't see it, but maybe that's just because i have a stable job at a time when everyone else is leaving the auto industry, packing it up and moving south.
anyway, i hope you stick around, cryzko, and keep making kick ass decks (and a lot more). detroit needs more good designers.
a few things i think you might want to consider; re-spacing the vertical pickets so that there is some kind "connection" with the new screen, you know either center a vertical on a vertical or center the void between two pickets and the vertical frame of the screen. the other thing to consider is the horizontal of the screen divider has no relationship to the horizontal of outside railing, can't those align? i'd almost wish that the upper screen was operable. i am not a big fan of stain, perhaps a darker wood would have been a better choice??
i had to relook my dwgs because of my number i gave above for the spacing..... the doorwalls are 5' wide +/- 1/2"..... so i had to buy 6'x10' roof panels to make it work..... the posts line up with the posts for the deck below so i know i had some sort of decent footing to help the loads a bit...... the screens could have been divided up in 3 sections as mentioned above but due to cost, i would have almost doubled the amount of screen to purchase due to sizing issues.......the residence is a "condo" but basically 3 condos slapped together with 2 floors/garage..... the roof panels slide if needed to be but the client said they would run a hose from the upstairs bathroom and spray the panels down........ for the wood issue, it would get really expensive to buy lumber that isnt doug fir/pine to build something like this..... for my other furniture i would use a higher standard wood.....but for what i did and the price i did it for....shyt...they got a good deal.....
and for the detroit thing......... if it wanst so hard for me to find a decent firm and actually be put on a design team or something creative then i would actually like it..... but all i get when i go to interviews for jobs is that either i cant get a certain position because i dont know 3d viz/max or because i've been out of the firms for so long....or because i run my own gig..........it's a catch 22 for me...... so all i can do is do what i can to make things happen....... i try
i am talking about the vertical pickets for the guardrail in front of the screen. i would pull them off and re-space them according to your screen and framing. i just thought the horizontal at the screen could perhaps be hidden behind the rail...
the reason i ask about the townhome is that many of those places have covenants that are pretty restrictive about things like this, and maybe if you do this again in a situation like this you could consider making it so that the user could disassemble the construction with two or three hand tools - perhaps this does it already, but i don't know...
the railing is from the original decking.... i was gonna take it down but the owners said leave it....plus the verticals cant have more than 3" (or 4") of gap between them..... i wish i could have done more to really make it happen but we all know the story of time/materials/budget/client..... the screen porches are legal in their division also... i was thinking about making a package deal and trying to hustle some other clients from the area but i would need to develop each system individually due to their decks/posts/sizes...... plus the budget would have be a bit more to actually make it a decent selling item

i love the detail pic- there is something really beautiful about that image...

i was gonna remove the rail and put it inside or redesign a new one but the budget was low and they were trying to get me to do "free" stuff..... so i finished the porch and told them that i can continue at a later date.....
