yes - i have both my resume(cv), application and portfolio in the same document. Im just curios if it normal/acceptable to send out these documents only as a PDF?

i would send a pdf first (with just a few pages) and when called for an interview would take the complete portfolio.

I do a lot of resume reading and interviewing ... as an employer, it's really helpful to me to receive, as a single PDF, a document containing a brief cover letter, a resume and 1-2 pages (max) of sample images. In 90% of the cases, this amount of information gives me enough understanding to know whether it would be worthwhile to speak with the candidate over the phone or invite the candidate in for an interview. It also is much easier (and faster) to circulate this file around the office for review by other senior members of the firm.

Remember - the first submittal is a screening tool for most firms - its purpose is to help establish whether there's a "fit" between the firm's needs and the candidate's apparent capabilities. If that preliminary fit doesn't exist, then it's probably a waste of the firm's time and the candidate's time to pursue the process further.

If you get past the screening stage, then your full printed portfolio becomes quite important to the ultimate hiring decision.

Do both... Follow up with a hard copy. They are less likely to overlook you with an actual portfolio sitting in front of them rather just a file in their inbox.

i agree with quizzical. 'fit' is the key word here. in the beginning, i just need an overview of your history and your abilities. i don't need to see everything you've ever done at this point.
