work samples vs. no work samples

sureel08

any opinions on work samples sent in with a resume/cover letter: do they have the ability to cost you a possible interview that you might have gotten if just the resume and cover letter were submitted?

I can't imagine work samples costing you a job interview... Unless, of course, your work sucks, in which case that would become apparent during the interview itself when you show your portfolio.

If your work is good, however, I could see the work samples landing some interviews that you might not get otherwise. It's one thing to say you do good work in your resume, but another thing to show you do good work with some nice images.

When I send out letters to NYC firms this spring I'll definately include a page or two of work samples along with my resume.
