We're running this competition at Princeton SoA this weekend (saturday, march 31) called AdHoc. It's a 6 hour charrette and the winning entry will get built. The brief is for a small scale installation at the Architecture Building.
We're going to expand it to other schools next year but for now, we have Vito Acconci coming in to be head juror.
Also, Vito is going to be leading a discussion about the winning entries on the following friday (april 6).
Personally, I think a little (friendly) competition between school would be healthy and down right educational. We're shooting for a focus on design and buildability instead of polished presentation boards, which is what we normally focus on. Ideally, next year's version would be a weekend kind of thing involving perhaps 24+ consecutive hours of charrette, like midnight madness.
Any thoughts or interest levels that you'd like to voice?
this time around it's only open to princeton students. but the goal is to create a regional/(nationwide?) student event that would take place over a weekend and allow students from various schools to interact.
this being the first time we've organized something like this, we felt the need to keep it at a small scale to begin with.
so you'd be interested in this in the future?
That's great to hear. hopefully that sentiment will still be around next year when we try and organize and bigger event. by the way, anyone from other schools want to help, holla back.
oh yeah, so the competition was yesterday, and I think it's safe to say that it was a success. we got ten teams, grads and undergrads, and they each had some pretty amazing products, particularly if you remember that it was 6 hrs. People from Vito's office came to the school for the afternoon and wandered the studios and talked to people about their designs. definitely looking forward to the comments and decisions from the judges.
