when it comes to professional work on a portfolio, is it best to concentrate on photographs of built work, renderings (or any cad-documentation at all?) probably all of the above?
is it still fashionable to create your own portfolio case?
i think you sort of answered your own question. its always great to see built work but your best strenghts should be represented in it. hand sketches, good. even seen indiv who had memos or written docs in their portfolio if thats what you been up to, or construction progress shots if you were really involved on site, or photos of great finished or study models etc. i think a portfolio only professional shots of built work says very little about you. and i do the same for either my personal portfolio or my business portfolio.
and if you only put cad drawings in....guess what, thats what your going to get, a cad monkey job. your portfolio should be a story telling document. i do like to talk to people about the way they think about a project at various level of input the have had on a project.
i have seen some cv's and interview some from the big firms who after 18 months or so, feel they need to show 10 projects they worked on. well i guess thats about 5 weeks per project or so. quality is much more important than quantity. if you were on a project a year, think about the phases of the project and how to represent your experience in that portfolio.
and go for the case if you can make it great, not because its fashionalbe but it shows your attention to detail and ability of craft. always like a bit of theater at an interview.
might be good to have a small little brief package [2-3 pages] with samples of your work to send with your cv or as a leave behind doc at your interview.
