landscape architect

Archilearner

if you are a landscape architect, where do you usually work? cooperate or private offices or like federal gov?
is there any landscape people working with big firms like SOM or Gensler?

what are the pros and cons of doing landscape instead of regular architectural studies?
Is it true that the job market of landscape architects is much better and they get paid higher?

thanks

I'm hoping they get paid higher 'cause I'm about to make the switch....

From my understanding, many firms focus on landscape only, the 800 pound gorilla being EDAW (www.edaw.com). Many architecture firms have in-house landscape capabilities, but most seem to hire landscape architects as a separate consultant, much as they would hire a structural engineer, civil engineer, etc.

some work with the government, such as the Park Service, but some architects do as well.

I have a small office where we have both Landscape Architects and Architects, including staff who are registered in both designations. Never been unemployed.

Diff-

there are plenty of 'scapers hanging around archinect to call this our home too. Some of the best landscape threads have benefited by the wisdom of our urban inclined architect friends around here. I've also found that the jobs section has almost as many LA jobs as you can find at the ASLA's website.

Take a moment to search archinect for 'landscape'. Some of my recent top picks include the Los Angeles Cornfields Competition, and backyard snow making. California, NYC and Boston tend to be the focus - so if you are elsewhere, we need your bioregion put on the archinect map!

And please, if you have something to discuss or news to share, please help make archinect greener then green. it's hard for me and heather ring to represent all the time!

yeah, where is Heather these days? london must be kicking her butt!

I know people on both sides and pay is pretty similar, (assuming size and type of firm eg. corporate/boutique/etc, are similar) the firm i currently work at is small but the type of work is broad; fed gov, security, multifamily housing, parks, k-12 schools, and university work. But I've also worked in a large res design/build as well. its all what you want right? The job market has been excellent as well for the last few years giving you choices--not sure about arch though.

LARCH-L tends to cover academic announcements, conferences, an occasional technical question, and rarely discussion about the profession. Definately serving another niche then archinect..
