I will be travelling in Denmark, Norway with possibly a short visit to Amsterdam. Any suggestions on what to see?
I'd like to visit historic areas as well as see some comtemporary architecture. Is there a website somewhere online that would be a good source for travel and architecture?
archinform is really good, especially for europe, and has historical as well as contemporary info. though a lot of the newer projects haven't been updated, except for starchitects.
check out http://www.cphx.dk/template/cphxsite/site.php?language=uk The link will bring you to a tour of Copenhagen. You can also go to the website of PLOT architects, and you will find a large array of their projects throughout Denmark. I would also consider traveling to Arhus, they have an amazing museum. Good luck, and have fun!
in norway there's quite a bit you could see...especially if you're looking
for historic stuff and not so much contemporary...although there's that as
well.
in oslo there's an architecture museum on bygdoy..an island in the
middle of oslo harbor. it covers most of the building types over the
past couple centuries..mainly old building types.
another thing to see would be the stave churches throughout the country.
bergen is interesting as a coastal town...roros is an old smelting village
that is a unesco historic site. trondheim has a historic old church that
they've been excavating around and restoring for a while.
i think you'd be best served taking a tour through the fjords...cause norway
has very unique topography.
oslo is a nice, small city that is easy to get around. you should see
vigeland's park...a massive sculpture park. the new opera house by
snohetta...snohetta should be a firm you should look at in general since
they have nice contemporary work. they have the art museum in
lillehammer which is nice. sverre fehn as well...he has a nice museum
in hamar...all of these cities can be reached by train..but if you're up to
it driving works too. just watch out your speed.
let me know if you have any questions about norway...been there about
fifteen or so times.
