I have stepped terrain that I created in 3Ds Max originating from polyline contours in AutoCAD that I want to export as 3ds file so I can import it into SketchUp. The file size is only 4.2 MB so its not a huge file. Whenever I try to export as 3ds, it gives me an error that its running out of memory.
I tried the ProOptimizier modifier but whenever I start the calculator its freezes and gives me the same error. My explanation is that because I am using school computers which prob can't handle 3Ds Max, its giving me this error.
It may be two things. First, are you running a 64 bit operating system? It may be reaching maximum ram limit if you are only running in a 32 bit environment.
Secondly, .3ds can only handle single objects that have less than 32,000 polygons (I believe). If the entire topo is one large object with over 32k of faces, you will need to convert to an editable poly object and select 20,000 faces at a time and detach them into their own object so that you have the same exact shape split into different objects. Or try another 3d export format.

Dear 3Ds Max nurds..

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance.
If you are trying to import the geometry you can just loft it in autocad save it as DXF or DWG and sketchup will accept it without geometry lost.
Either way you really don't need max to import a file into sketchup. Hope it helps
I am only using Max because it takes 2 seconds to make topography using the terrain button. Thanks for your comment though
export it as a dxf from max?
Just import the contours to sketchup and use the sandbox tool?
