I used to subscribe to metropolis but found graphics hurftul to my senses...just a little too much. Found myself drained by the time I got to the article.

I bought some one offs of

four letter words design mags - is this a trend we are seeing?

Purple

, LTTR, and Girls Like Us are the ones I purchase consistently. Purple is my favorite and I wish they'd do a "Purple Place" (their "architectural" articles are less about the building designs and more about the places holistically, which I love) like they split the Purple Fashion from Purple Journal & Purple Sexe, so there would be more things about various locations. I subscribe to Good magazine, but wish it were more content-heavy. I also subscribe to W, but that was one of those "oh... a year's worth for $12, ok" decisions.

I like CLEAR, its a mix of fashion, graphic, industrial, and architectural design. Highly recomend it. It has beautifully thick pages and just feels nice. And every issue comes with these crazy 4X5 images on magnetic paper. very cool.

Oh, and I like the Dwell tv show. I tivo it every weekend on FIne Living!

i'm always sort of shocked by the amount of hate dwell gets...
there are far worse examples of magazines out there..and
the fact that they actually try to make architecture accessible to
the public seems like something we would want.

it's a bit shmarmy and pretentious..but the projects in there
aren't mcmansions or architectural digest quality.

their used to be a mag i really liked: madison...it went across
a whole range of topics.

i like surface as well..flaunt, black book...most of the others i
get have been mentioned.

we really like new yorker specially our neighbors give it to us after they read it. also we have a gift subsciription to national enquirer ennit, i read this morning tom cruises wife said "you can't control my life" to him. also a former schlepper said anna nic simith was injected drugs by howard stern (different howy stern than the radioman, the boyfriend-husband of ans). there were tons of info on other heavy stuff. i ain't a light reader mon....

the hate for dwell stems from the fact that at the beginning it was refreshing to see modern work made accessible to the masses and a little advertising thrown in, and now it's become a catalog for elitist shoppers, with some architecture thrown in the mix.

beta, I can understand that. I guess part of the reason I still like dwell is that every other magazine has tons of ads for crappy products, while dwell actually has ads for products I like.

not a mag but still a subscription >> McSweeney's

good writing with an always interesting binding. this month's was a hardbound cover with three books on the inside. the spine of the hard cover and each of the books within have a magnet on the inside. keeps the books nice and neat within the hard cover but allows you to remove the one you want to read.

yeah - purple rocks

@nambypambics - id contribute to purple dwell, well it wouldnt be called this, thats too considered.

IN
- Werk, bauen + wohnen (most considered architecture magazine ueberhaupt)
- Purple Journal
- Wired
- Fantastic man (because of its swank)

OUT
- Domus > its constant heady references to modern italian masters
- Architecture Australia > Just look at what its done to australian architecture
- Architecture >waste of paper, time, shipping, thought, lives, thought, etc

what about Frame, I kinda like that one. Icon is ok but not as good as Metropolis. More european oriented (makes sense). I really really like Architectural Design, but I think it's out on a bi-monthly basis. Good old research there...
