summer internship

smthn

Greeting all,

I sent my resume and portfolio 10 days ago for summer internship and I have not heared from the most of firms(mostly small firms). Should I call or email them? If so, what should I say? Should I ask if they got my resume?

Before I sent my resume, I already emailed them about who I should send my resume to and got emails back from the most of firms I asked.

Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I don't know at what point you are in your education, but in general, when you are relatively inexperienced, it's hard to get jobs. If you're still an undergrad, unless you have connections, you may have to send out 100 resumes to get a job offer. If you're sending paper resumes, I would wait maybe 2 weeks after they would have received it to follow-up via telephone. Small firms tend to have pretty unpredictable needs and often don't know if they'll need any extra help for the summer until a few days or a few weeks before you would start, so you're still rather early here.

Good luck and post more questions if you have them.

Chase,
Thanks for your reply! Acutally, I am in the third year of M.arch program and I have a few summer intern experience.
Anyway, I really appreciate your help.

Call them. I found out a year later that I missed a job opportunity because the firm I applied to was moving offices and my resume was buried in the shuffle.

Give it a few more days and then do a follow-up phone call. Just mention that you sent a resume in a few weeks ago looking for a summer gig and wanted to know if they have reviewed it yet and you're available to answer any questions they may have.

If they're smaller firms they probably don't have a HR department handling this sort of thing and the principles get busy and forget about whose resume is on their desk.

Also doesn't hurt to send out more resumes. It's only a summer job so I wouldn't worry about finding that perfect botique firm. Save that for when you are looking for permanent employment.

try to remember that you're not the center of the firm's universe.

while I know that's not what you want to hear, at this time of year, most decent firms literally are INUNDATED with unsolicitated resumes - both from upcoming graduates and students seeking summer jobs.

i'm amazed at the attitudes of some students, who seem to feel we're under some obligation to a) immediately read their package in its entirety, and b) automatically respond with an invitation for them to come in for an interview. when we don't, you can feel the irritation on the other end of the phone or e-mail.

i recognize this comes mostly from youthful energy and inexperience. however, from the employer's perspective it can be a bit exasperating.

i can speak only for our firm, but we make a genuine effort to respond to every resume we receive. that's very time consuming - so when we get inundated, it may take us a while to respond to yours. we're not ignoring you or being rude - it's just that you're part of a very tall stack.

please try to keep that in mind.
