what i would like to actually know is in which type of firms do these programs get used?

im makin guesses...
sketchup - small firms - mostly residential projects
commerical firms...

rhino - blobby firms.. next generation design firms, boutique firms..

maya - umm.. same as above...

revit - high end commerical firms who need to churn out a lot of dwgs fast based on design models

3ds max - somehow i feel this has become an industry standard..

these are first impressions.. will add more later..

correct me if im wrong though..

professionally - have used rhino, form-z, and sketchup

at UCLA it's rhino and maya for the most part.

On the job - Mostly AutoCAD with a little Viz

In school - AutoCAD, Viz, 3Ds Max, SketchUp, Rhyno, and a splash of Revit.

It's good to have a basic understanding of most programs, being that different companies have different standards. If you need a deep knowledge of any program, I would expect an employer to train me on anything besided basic operations.

Rhinoceros
everywhere now

but know acad 10-adt2007, max/viz maya, Intellicad(s)

not sketchup formz archicad or microstation though

wouldn't learning everything be a bit much if I already have what I need and it's interpolaristicly complementary?

any opinions on which is better? never used maya, but i know 3ds max, rhino, form z, and sketch up and in my opinion 3ds max 9 blows them all out of the water--though i'd really put sketch-up in another category since it's meant for quick design. anyway, rhino is all anyone uses at my school, even though the rendering quality is very low compared to 3ds max. my hunch is it's because rhino is easier. . thoughts?

why, is no one using modo?

I tried it because I'm a mac user and rhinoceros have decided not to port (lame ...) I use Rhino through parallels but I'm really really loving modo 203, awesome interface and it runs beautifully on a Mac Pro (pretty decent on my Macbook Pro too.)

Any Mac users using other things?
