Since nobody else has just yet, I'll be the one to inform everybody that BMI is in no way whatsoever an accurate way of measuring anything at all. Nothing.
My BMI right now is about 29. That's borderline obese. If you were to look at me, you might think that I could stand to lose about 10 pounds, but that's it. The thing is, I've been going to the gym fairly regularly for over 10 years, and have quite a lot more muscle mass than most people with the same BMI.
One of my former jobs was to write articles about fitness and bodybuilding for website that gets tens of millions of hits a day.... The whole issue of BMI infuriates me to no end.
25, which is considered average for my weight and height. BPI stats want to dictate that my "healthy range" is 19-23. Are they talking age or fat:) Seriously, though, I don't place much credence on this figure – I've always been athletic yet I've always produced a higher BPI. What-ever.
Kartik is this some kind of research study - you're not producing a fat archinect infomercial are you? :-)
I'm not going to say mine here, I'm working very hard to lower it. Even when I was in high school though I had a very high BMI. I danced and marched/spun (color guard) for around 20 hours a week in high school, and was basically a rock. So I've always found it interesting that something called the Body Mass Index actually uses weight as a measurement instead of mass, because for many people they do not have the usual correlation.

don't get mad, just check your waist measurement in addition to bmi.
Seriously. Let's say your BMI is 28. We all know that that doesn't mean anything....
.....the 'correlating' factor they're trying to link is to waist size. What are the categories for waist size?
LESS than 40", and MORE than 40"
So.... if I have a BMI of 30 (technically obese) yet a waist size of 28 inches (basically an extremely fit person), then I'm at increased risk of diabetes, hypertension and CVD?
I think I'll take the risk, thank you very much.
Simply put, BMI tells you NOTHING other than how tall you are and how much you weigh. It has nothing to do with lean body mass, muscle mass, body fat percentage, or anything else related to your health.
If BMI meant anything, it wouldn't tell us that every professional bodybuilder is obese, which obviously they aren't.
Not real impressed by this BMI thing. When I was running a lot, I was 155 and 6'-1", which the online calculator at www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ says that I was at a BMI of 20.4 (average). At the time, our trainer measured me at 4% body fat and said that the reason that I was constantly sick was because I was radically underweight. Ten years later, I'm the same height, much healthier, and forty pounds heavier. According to BMI, I'm still average.
i've never heard of bmi but according to some of the online calculators my score is 19.3...that sounds obese to me. i'd rather be in the single digits so maybe it's time for a diet or something.
bmi is a very general guideline .. the key number is: 40" waist (or less). so logically i would take this as somewhere around 38"-40" (they should have been more specific with the range below 40").
obviously if you have a bmi of 28 and a waist of 28", you are very slim with a lot of muscle mass - and you are not at an increased risk.
the point is: look at your bmi and look at your belly. if you have a beer belly, you are at an increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, etc. if you're a ripped body builder (28 bmi 28" waist), they don't worry - everyone knows you are not obese.
to say 'bmi tells you nothing' would be wrong. it tells us one part of your physical nature and you have to evaluate other things to determine overall health.
reminds me of how the vultures (aka students from other departments who had no significant interest in student architecture work) would descend upon the critique-day sandwiches at my school...
Wikipedia encapsulates my plight: "an ectomorphic individual could conceivably receive an unhealthily low reading, when in fact their body type makes them naturally thin no matter what they eat. Ectomorphs can also obtain healthy readings, when their body fat percentage is higher than recommended, as their low lean mass will lower the BMI. People with short stature tend to have lower BMI. "
guess i'm an ectomorph too. also from wiki: The Chipmunk characters Alvin (mesomorph), Simon (ectomorph), and Theodore (endomorph) adhere strongly to Sheldon’s types in both mind and body.
well before i started grad school in sept my BMI was 23.9, now, a few
midreviews, a final review, and a breakup later, i'm at 21.1. definitely
the breakup diet supplemented with the final review diet yielded fabulous weight loss results. however, not a recommended experience.
I work out 5 days a week. I have a body fat percentage somewhere in the mid-teens. I played college football and have put on roughly 10 lbs. since (in the midsection). Stocky, maybe. Obese, come on!
Male, 26, 5'-10", 235 lbs., BMI = 33.7
I'd have to lose over 60 lbs. just to hit "normal!!!"
I'm definitely a combo Endo/Mesomorph. I put on any sort of weight easily, and need excercise to make sure that weight is muscle instead of flab. I've got the broad shoulders and 'classic hourglass shape' as well as many personality traits of a Mesomorph, but I put on weight (either flab or muscle) easily like an endomorph.

26 - i used a bmi calculator online - but when we did this in high school i remember it involved calipers.
nah, that was your fat percentage test, not BMI.

yeah for bodybuilders and some athletes bmi doesn't make sense. but for 95% of the population, it is a good (general) go-by regarding obesity level.
come on, it's not that hard, you know if you got some fat around the midsection or not .. and you know if you've got schwarzenegger biceps
