Architect from India, looking for jobs in NY area

Pocket Venus

I have 3 1/2 years' experience working as an architect in India, have worked on residential, commercial, institutional and industrial projects as well as retail and residential interior design. I am now moving to New York this spring, and want to look for a job for a year while I research graduate schools and programs for entry in Fall 2008. I would appreciate any insight on the job hunting process, particularly portfolio guidance.

1. What is the procedure for a person for a foreign degree to apply for jobs?
2. How much of student work should I include in my portfolio?
3. Is it good to include non-architecture work, such as poster design, travel sketches and so on?

Thanks in advance!

chicarchitect, please keep cracking your wisecrack comments until, thankfully your cad-monkey job is outsourced to India. Lets see who works at 7-eleven then.

As for the original question, here are some pointers:
-the pre-requisite to being able to work in the US is to have either a working permit (h1 visa) or green card, so if you dont have a green card, you will have to find an employer who will sponsor your h1 visa
-in all honestly, it might be worth just spending the time making your portfolio, applying to good programs, meeting professors and people who can help you getting good assistantships, than jumping into this whole visa issue. Honestly, if at all you find someone that wants to sponsor your h1 visa, i dont know if they will do so for you, because companies want to invest time and money in people who will stay, not employees to run off to school in 5-6 months of joining.
-as for the portfolio, it totally depends on what kinds of skills you want to highlight
-its okay to include travel sketches, photographs etc just to show your depth of work, but dont overdo it.

Thank you. I do have a visa that entitles me to work in the US, so I really do want to work, since applying to grad school can't keep me occupied full-time!

sporadic,

i think PocketVenus means that he/she wants a job while figuring out which school to apply to, not while actually doing grad school.

how's school coming along for you? do you guys have term-end reviews coming up?

4th-year previews on the 19th. i go on and do my little show and dance at 10:30.

11:30 onwards, i'll be in the bar weeping into my pint...

good luck with your presentation, chief.
