Yes, it was trashed, very very sad day. Bob was crushed. I didnt know it was a guy from the job site, I just knew it was a drunk guy. took out tons on the job site, and then the bench, some of the concrete curbing, and the handicap button by the door. I would've cried, but I was too busy doing design.
The "car" bench was there when I left in 2006, and the bench made of concrete and wood slats, across fromt eh car bench, fell apart from freeze thaw, or bad crete.
the bench that got hit by the car was originally nice but aging. a design build studio later reconstructed the wood seat and back while keeping the metal structures. and it was this version that was destroyed in the drunken rage of the construction worker in a car. (note this drunken worker finished his destruction by hitting several parked cars in roxborogh near my old house)
the car bench was tossed for the NAAB reviews along with the crumbling concrete and wood slats bench and bent plexi 'model displays'. a quick way to clean up the architecture department's 'image'
the carbon fiber bench is a design 8 project from fall 2008 semester.
And yeah sarah, when i signed up for design-build, i was hoping for an actual you know, design-build. not a freaking bench, I must say it was a little dissapointing for my senior year of design.
Well, you should've waited it out one more year. We did two rooms, game room and computer room, for the boys and girls club in north philly, somewhere off rt 1. It was hard, but I'm glad it was occupyable. We were suppose to do three rooms, but an SUV hit the outside wall of the art room, and rendered the structure un usable, and it needed to be repaired.
It was my first time finding out how diffucult clients, and Project managers could be.
Just saw this post and thought I might put my two cents... I graduated from Philly U. with a B.Arch in 2005. I think it's a great school for all those in the design fields (be it architecture, fashion, textile, graphic, etc). Not sure how well it has served those in the Business/Finance fields -- I would think other local schools such as Temple, Villanova & Penn would really give it a run for it's money there.
My boss and others I've worked with have been impressed with the knowledge and capabilities I've brought to them early on in my career, and I must admit I wasn't sure upon graduating how well prepared I was going to be. I must be doing alright though... I have been working as Project Manager on several large projects including high-rise residential & recreational bldgs and everything has been going very well. All in all, Philly U students seem to be as prepared as school can get you for the real world. I've heard from colleagues that their firms prefer to hire Philadelphia University grads over other philadelphia-area institutions.
And by the way - the car bench was not "ridiculous." I take offense to that. It was very comfortable and served it's purpose rather well.
As an addendum to my above post - one thing schools in general really overlook is the buiding code and accessibility issues. Not that I really wanted to spend my time in school dealing with that stuff - an i understand why schools emphasize DESIGN, I think it at least should be addressed. I think if I broke down my time in past 3 years of working about 75% of it is focused on life safety, accessibility and code requirements, not to mention the time meeting with code officials, reasearching requirements and trying to convince clients that these are things that they NEED to do in order to get their projects approved.
Sorry so long - and i'm not really angry about the "car" comment. We had our laughs too.
Haha...no, no. Actually I thought the swoop bench turned out really nice. It's a shame people feel the need to destroy things just for something to do. I was jk about the car comment. We stepped back when it was done and realized that it did, in fact, look like a car. I hear it's gone anyway, so no matter.
And, no, I'm not in Philly anymore, I work out of Lansdale, PA.
Missy S_ _ _ _ _. Not that my identity is all that secret with my screenname. I worked on the bench with...hmmm.e.ed, mark, holly, tom, I think that's all. Wow, I can't believe i remember all of that. This is Jeremy right? I think that's what I read above...
Yeah, it's been a while...It's good to run into someone I know with a relative topic and be able to post for once, rather than just lurk in the shadows!! haha...
i go to penn and ive had some exposure to other programs around philly. a lot of our crits come from temple, and for the most part, they havent been that great. the smartest person i've met from there is the guy who runs the shop. smart, insightful, and unbelievable craft.
haha. just jump in with some random comments now and then, everyone else does.
I do agree with you though that Philly U. (and I'm sure many other schools too) taught very little in regards to what we end up actually doing once we get out of school, but hey, it was fun while it lasted.
Anyone here educated at Philadelphia University (College of Textiles and Science)?

yeah i was part of the reconstruction on the bench using the existing metal structure.
nice quixotica.. any hints to your real p.u. self haha
Jlaucks
did you mean fall 2006 semester?
Then I may know you, or at least what you look like.
So they didn't continue the REAL design build like we did at the boys and girls club? I mean, it was a pain, but it was better than making a bench.
At least it will look better on my resume.
Jeremy

not that you should reveal your secret identity for the whole world to see
