M.arch---New Zealand or Australia?

doromomo

I 'm currently  an international student in NZ, doing my last year of Bachelor at Auckland Uni.  I wanna gain a few of years of working experience in NZ or Australia before heading back to Asia.

However, according to some architects, the market for architecture here doesn't seem to be ideal in the next few years. And there are much more job opportunities in Australia. I'm just wondering if it is a good decision for me to go to Australia, studying my M.arch there and work there after it?   Or....if I stay in NZ to finish my Master, is it still easy for me to find jobs in OZ with my degree?  I will appreciate if any advice is given:)

Sorry this is not related to your question but Im  a NZ yr13 high school student planning to study architecture at Auckland Uni. I was wondering, is the job market in NZ quite  bad? I thought there would be more places due to rebuilding of CHCH.  Is it because of the high output of graduates?

Hey tjdlghkd, you are right, high output of graduates is a big problem. There were very few students from last year's master class found real architectural jobs in Auckland, some went overseas and found good jobs. The market is not extremely bad, but for new graduates, it seems really competitive. The CHCH is rebuilding also looks very slow and unlikely to cause a blooming market.

But beside that,  I am really impressed by the teaching of Auckland Uni.  The 2.5 years have been a really good time of my life . Do not hesitate to enroll.  I am not  local so the high cost of tuition fee is a big problem to me,  so I'm just looking at the employment(after graduation) side more.

I have a similar but not totally similar situation as you having.

I was struggling to choose between NZ, Aussie and UK to further my master, and yes, employment is something we care about alot.

And then I decided to go to UK after I talked to my employer/ex-lecturer and my elder sister.
My employer is actually a graduate from AA and have worked with big people like Peter Cook, Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster. I am not trying to brag.. Just to clarify what makes his opinion so important to me to consider..He may not be one of the biggest architect on earth, but I believe his experience is definitely crucial to us.

What i understood from them is that we as an architect, we are designers,we need inspirations. Inspirations come from environment we live in and the people we meet.
and hence an environment that is interesting / happening / unpredictable is necessary to triggers a designer's creativity.

Second point is, everywhere is hard to get employment nowadays.
even in australia. My sister is a PR there. Australia are very strict nowadays. Alot of company prefer to hire PR. If you have no PR, you gotta pray hard. But Im not sure for your case as NZ has always been in a tight bond with each another, maybe you have higher chance.(I am Malaysian, maybe that is why its harder for us??)
But nonetheless, employment rate relies alot on your network.
No matter how good you are, you still have risks to be unemployed for years before you find a decent job.
---- Choosing a place / environment where you can meet a lot of different kinds of people will really ease your way out in hard life in future.

So, basically, Its all about what kind of environment and people you looking for. and which school offers you what you really need.

I hope this help though.. i know its a hard decision to make...
been struggled for months myself...but im ready for it now! :)

really thank you rujyouki! Yes, it's a extremely hard decision to me. The world is indeed very tough for architects nowadays...... I think I'll just go to Australia!

Good luck on your UK life !

Are there no opportunities for you back home in Asia. I know many architects who go and seek employment there and they usually find some good opportunities. It should be even easier for you as you know the language but you got good education. Just curious?
