Friendly Spatial Barriers...

dillup.

Hey, I'd appreciate a bit of advice.

I'm doing a small project now for an already completed building in which the clients are second guessing the room layout and furnishings (it's a little more interesting than it sounds). Anyway the client needs more privacy for one area but my boss doesn't want to put up a wall. He has suggested to me some kind of art piece, or a large lamp, or some kind of inflatable 'thing' with a shiny skin.

clearly he's not sure exactly what he wants but its up to me to find some suggestions. anyway he kept talking about some kind of inflatable thing used in camping which could maybe be stood up to form a barrier. i really don't know what he's talking about here or how it would work, anyone have any ideas or links to images?

thanks.

oh oh oh

a wall of soapbubbles...I mean, not literally.
whats the 'feel' of the room? If its nice red Panton-ish kitsch (which is a good thing..there is a nice kitsch!)....then use soapbubbles... I mean, not literally. could be nice coloured resin balls..and then when they switch the lights on , mmmmm...or cool marble balls I used to play with. you could just pour them intoi a glass tank :p

inflatable structures...well, i'm not sure i agree with the notion for a 'permanent' application but i don't know the project...so...a few suggestions in the interest of problem solving:

http://www.creatableinflatables.com/
see the 'custom shapes' section, although most of their stuff requires a blower to keep it upright...but they may be interested in more of a custom job in a plain ole' rectangle cum room divider.

ok, there's someting clear.

along the lines of uneDITed's post...what about aerogel? maybe its still cost-prohibitive and 'too new' a technology but it has a very sensual texture-look to it...and it does transmit light.

maybe Kalwall? it is light weight and you could build a panel into whatever furniture-like enclosure you wanted to.... but of course, its rigid.

ah, here you go, this looks right up your alley:

good luck, Dillup.

Try looking at this new modern modular wall system at

http://www.idividewalls.com

Divide Designer Walls are a unique and dynamic alternative to standard room divider partition walls to separate spaces. The flexible modular design enables the creation of a variety of configurations to suit any function.

I love that one, go do it. Go for outsize letterforms, or an assemblage of common objects that are related to the function of the space or identity of the proprietor.

If those are too far out, a bookshelf always works.
