This a question for anyone at the GSD (I would post this on the student facebook, but I can't seem to log in). I'm starting at the GSD this year and in the market for a computer; I know we are required to buy a laptop, but what I want to know is, what percentage of your computing work do you do at your desk? I was going to buy an 800 lb Asus laptop, but feeling the weight, I thought maybe it would make sense to buy a decent (but not incredible) laptop for class/travel/etc and a nice desktop for my studio desk. I know this is a matter of personal preference, but what I'm after is the structure of GSD classes. Am I expected to have all of my computing power at my disposal when I bring my laptop to class?
Does anyone know anything about the render farm? Do we need something heavy duty that can crunch out renderings on our own computer, or can we network it out?
cheap laptop for typing, web surfing needs etc for when you travel and lecture use... good desktop for your core work.. Plus I'm sure GSD has a computing lab where you can do most of the rendering/3D work that requires heavy processing power
you can build an i7 desktop and buy cheap laptop (something like an i3-based samsung s3, that goes for like 350 dollars) for the price of a shitty macbook pro.
you should be able to get most of your rendering done on that i7 unless you're doing something truly insane.

GSD: laptop+desktop or just a fatty laptop?
