I have a friend who won a Tony for set design. That's a cool field.

special effects creators are having a hard time figuring out what comes out of exploding buildings. Could be a possibility.

Most of my classmates are practicing architects, but some went into:

real estate development
set design
airline attendant
industrial design
elevator consultant
fishing boat captain
taco bell owner

Over the years I've been offered positions as a:

high school teacher
commodities trader
carpenter / contractor
boat builder
chef

People I know went into:

teaching
animation
modelling (not the weigh 90 lbs and do lotsa coke type)

computer modelling
working at microsoft
professor college level
millwork


is being broke an option?

development
graphic design
industrial design
construction

if you're leaving the profession b/c of money, architects have been very successful switching to:

Fashion Design
Product Design - esp. Jewellery making, Pottery, etc.
Interior Design

though they've long been stigmatised for being too feminine.

too feminine. yes, someone might accuse you of enjoying swallowing.

oh my god, a clap of thunder in my skull.

i jumped into construction and freakin love it..
still work with architecture everyday..
just not behind a computer screen..
lots to learn when ur actually in charge of building the thing vs. drawing it...
plus the extra $$ isnt bad either...

Seriously, I'm considering going to Santa Claus School, cause I want to get a high profile Santa Job....my Goal Is Macy's NYC, or Harrads in London.

I heard on NPR the other day that the average holiday bonus this year at Goldman Sachs, the investment firm in NYC, was $600,000. Ricockulous. Can you imagine working there? Surely even the receptionist is given a huge bonus there.....if they weren't and they heard that report on the radio, you might have a "reception mutiny"....

SO there ya go. We're moving to Manhattan so my husband can be an artist and I can work as a receptionist for Goldman Sachs, because dammitall, I'm sick of the salary of an architect.

in case you haven't noticed, the world is awash in capital right now...there's a reason why paintings are now selling for $150 million.

incidentally, that "average" bonus number of $600k is rather skewed. the big shots are scoring bonus easily surpassing 8 figures while i'm guessing the receptionist gets something considerably less. here's a link on just what some of these big shots can afford to buy with their bonus $...but no mention of how much it'd cost to insure my backside ;)

move to Napa... grow grapes, design your own winery... then live off wine and good food...

could try this:

i know of at least 2 cases where this happened.

1. make money
2. hire you ignoramus ex-boss for a promising project
3. blow up, throw a fit like he used to do, tell him he knows nothing about business OR architecture.
4. fire his ass and tell everyone how incompetent he is.

get a crew and start breakdancing on the corner....... make about 300 a day...
