I'm curious to know if anyone received an acceptance into the UofT M.Arch program with advanced placement this year. A friend of mine did their undergrad B.A. in architecture there and was told that it isn't offered any more.
I emailed the school about it and they said that they don't share this information.
Second Year Advanced Standing Option in the Master of
Architecture:
The Master of Architecture (MArch) offers an advanced
standing option for individuals who possess a four year
non-professional Bachelor degree in architectural studies,
environmental design, or comparable degree focusing
on the built environment. Students must have previously
completed, at minimum, three design studio courses, two
courses in visual communications or representation, two
courses in architecture history and theory (one in 20th
century), and two courses in architectural technology
and ecology. The course of study includes 12.5 FCE over
five sessions (2.5 academic years), including two core
design studios, two option design studios, (4.0 FCE),
thesis preparation and research (0.5 FCE), a design thesis
(1.5 FCE), and five elective courses of (2.5 FCE). The
granting of admission to the advanced standing option
is based on the merits of the student’s overall academic
background and strength of design portfolio as evaluated
by the MArch admissions committee. Each applicant to
the MArch program with a suitable undergraduate degree
will be evaluated for advanced standing during the
admissions process. No separate application is required.
@dionysus I know they have this on the website, but it seems like they're not honouring this to students with the proper requisites. My friend, who completed his B.A. in Architectural studies there, fulfilled all of the stated requirements but had to start his M. Arch from year 1.
I was always under the impression that AP status was given out on a case by case basis - that even if one met the AP pre-recs, it'd still depend on the quality of their work/portfolio, etc.
byen01 is right. AP status is granted based on portfolio, GPA, etc.on top of the pre-reqs and the university you come from. Unfortunately, unless you have an exceptional portfolio, AP is normally not granted to U of T's BA architectural studies grads.
whoever told you they do not give out advanced placement is a giant liar. I know a few people that were granted AP. One did not even have a architecture background at all, and they got advanced placement this year.
For some reason, I have never heard of anyone that did the BA studies there getting AP. The good news about doing a BA there is that you will be heavily favored over everyone else.
Why they choose certain people for advanced placement over others is a bit of a mystery. I can understand some cases but I have seen some really random choices of why they choose some people. So try not to take it personally kavvyr
A friend of mine called the school and they told her that they were aware that they didn't want to lose out on good students by taking too long and that we should expect an email by the end of the week.

University of Toronto M.Arch
Hi everyone,

I was accepted there 3 years ago and was told in person at the time that they do not offer advanced placement.
Was looking into it earlier...it's on the first few pages of the MArch guide:
