I have always found Archinect to be an excellent recourse so I’m very excited my first post. ☺
I’m an artist with a BFA in Sculpture from a well-respected Art College. My artwork is definitely interested in notions of architecture/space/site-specificity etc.
I was going to take the standard art school route: BFA to MFA to some form of art career.
However, I have always had an interest in architecture (although I should state that I’m not interested in being an architect) so I’m considering art programs within architecture departments, so far I have found:
SMACT Art, Culture and Technology – MIT
MDesS Art, Design and the Public Domain – Harvard
I don’t know anyone who has studied at MIT or Harvard, so I was hoping that someone on Archinect could enlighten me a bit.
How are the ‘Art’ programs considered within the architecture departments? I guess essentially what I’m asking is: how ‘involved’ are these programs with the department – are the programs really self-contained or open and connected with say the MArch programs and other students?
Also if anybody is at MIT/Harvard and know someone on these programs can you please forward me contact details? It’s especially hard to find out about Harvard’s ‘Art, Design and the Public Domain’ program because it is brand new. Thanks guys.
If you email Barbara Elfman at the GSD - she is the administrative director of the MDesS programs at the GSD - she can probably put you in touch with current Art, Design and the Public Domain students, especially ones that are coming from a similar background to yours.
