AutoCAD 2007

Archilearner

I am currently using autoCAD2005. I think 2007Version has come out....
Should I switch to it skipping 2006Version? or is it the way to update step by step?
is 2007 a whole lot different from 2005? Do you recommend it?

Thanks!!

2007 is very different in terms of 3d modelling, it's taken a lot of queues from 3dmax and sketchup. but it doesnt do a very good job of it IMHO, or maybe its just that i'm too used to 2004. for regular drawings, 2007 is quite an improvement over 2004, im not too sure about how much better it is than 2005/06.

Begrudgingly we are migrating from ACAD LT 2004 to LT 2007. Anyone know how painful / painless the process is?

I'm also thinking of making the Leap to 2007 Full Version. Wondering if it makes sense for a small firm? Thinking that new hires would rather be excited about working in 3-D than the old fashioned way. Anyone have any feed back?

it's painless, the real upgrades are to the 3d portion. this is also the time where the new .dwg format replaces the old format. there are other little dohickies, but nothing that should dissuade you - unless purchase price is a factor...

2002 sux - crashes to much...files are to big.
2004 totally sux i think i used it once before someone else told me to not put that program on your computer...while i watched my friends computer melt.
2005 i guess is ok i use the desktop version though - at this point file sizes are much much smaller than 2002 and 2004
2006 is pretty decent i havent had a problem yet...although i refuse to go on the internet with my ACAD computer.
2007 i havent used yet but we have it at work people tend to like the 3d modeling...although we also have revit...so its sorta a competition betwen the 2...we are trying to decide between the 2 programs ...which we should leave behind

save down? don't save back on autocad, too many problems, plus the file compression that the newer versions have is lost when saved down...revit is the future and i start training for that very soon!

Autodesk has a new and FREE stand alone file transformer thingy that will save up and back from ACAD r 12 to 2007. We no longer save up or down in acad anymore. But read that EULA! It is scary.

The only problem I have with 2007 is importing into other programs. Some don't recognise the 2007 format yet, and need the 2004 format to import.

2007 automatically saves in 04 format unless you specifically tell it to save to a different version (why you would i have no idea). the 3d is the most significant upgrade, which is amazing. no crashes or cross platform problems. completely seemless with 3dsmax and sketchup which rocks. though it does slow sketchup down quite a bit due to the more complex objects and shapes. going from '04 to'07 is a breeze. i recommend playing around in the help menu to get the most. don't waste your money on "bibles" for cad. waste of paper unless of course you need a REALLY BIG paper weight.

I'm looking at the 30 day free trial of autocad 2007. There is now 29 days left and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how to get a good handle of this program. Seems like there is no real starting point or clever directions of how to walk thru a drawing. I'm making some neat drawings playing but looking to really figure out how to control this animal to get buildings not just cones, boxes ect....

Oh yeah, I'm not a big fan of the new XRef manager either. I can still access the old one by using Classicxref, but I think they shouldn't have changed it.

the new xref manager is nice, you can even manage images there now. you just have to know how to work the browse.
