Anyone have any experience with BIArch now that they're two years in? It looks like a very interesting program in terms of combining research and design, but I honestly haven't heard much about it and I'm wondering if anyone has insight? I just looked on their website and it appears that their 2012-2013 masters program has been postponed - I wonder why.
1st of all I am an outsider to architectural education in Barcelona.
Anyway, maybe the master has been postponed because of the recession. BIArch was a joint venture of 2 catalan universities and CaixaCatalunya, a building society (a bank that has no shareholders and thus its profits are re-invested in local economy and spent on social/cultural activities through charity trust) based in Barcelona.
This building society merged with some other smaller building societies, transformed into a bank and then went into bankruptcy. The state rescued it and then auctioned for 1€ to a big spanish Bank (can't remember which one). As a result the budget of the trust and any institution it took part of is a question with no answer from now.
Hope this makes things clearer. If not, sorry for so much waffling!! ;)
dan, your explanation makes things clearer, but it doesn't make things sound too promising! anyone else have any insight/first hand experience with the school?

Barcelona Insititute of Architecture?
There was a previous discussion about this new program back in 2010.

PS: I know all this because I live in Spain at the moment, although not in Bcn.
