I'm in Calgary, Canada...just entering 2nd year of the MArch program.

The program here has been sending students to Barcelona for the most part of 5-10 years now.

We usually focus on urban planning and development, but the program changes a bit every year.

If we run into each other, I'll buy you some wine!
Cheers!

MADianito, I don't know about your friend but i've been living in Barcelona and around for 28 years -that is.. my whole life- and yes most people talk catalan -and those who don't speak it at least they understand it-..
if your friend is from Spain or a foreigner, people will adress him in spanish, just for courtesy -maybe in english if your interlocutor is college-educated-
The IaaC program may be in English but if you plan to know more about the city and its life -specially since you seem so fascinated with catalan culture and Dalí and Tapies and .. "everything"...- you MUST know some catalan, even if its only the basics...

Your comparation of the basques and the catalans is pretty erroneous. Catalan is the 8th most spoken language of the EU, there are about 4 million people that talk catalan, and 11 million that understand it... the basque language is an endangered language, very few people talk it... in Bilbao, even some of the radicals talk spanish, you need to find the right places -bars, social clubs, etc- to hear people talking euskera (basque)... Catalan is on the streets, shops, universities and everywhere. There are a lot of people here who don't give a shit for catalan culture or the language and even if they don't talk it, they understand it -which is pretty easy cause it's not that different from spanish, french or italian, they are all latin-rooted languages, the basque language is older than latin.. and its pretty strange and very difficult to understand... more than german, that's why its not commonly used-

Foreign students in other catalan exchange programs such ERASMUS, for euro students, or SOCRATES have caused a great discussion about what to do in universities... even the administration took part in it some time ago, talking with universities deans, professors and students... and they agreed that catalan SHOULD be the official language that teachers use in their classes.
The IaaC is a different thing, I think its the only MArch in Barna that it is presented in English.. and that is basically because it is a very elitist program -just the name is pretty pretentious "Advanced" architecture.. yeah.. sure-. And that's why it is so expensive. It's adressed to foreign (rich) students. And I wouldn't be so impressed with the people outside architecture they bring for conferences and seminars. Some time ago they had people like Bigas Luna in their guests list...

your attitude of "forget catalan you'll be fine only with spanish" is, actually, very annoying. show some respect.

MaDianto,
I think you will make it easier on yourself if you learn some Catalan. Or at least increase your chances of making friends. I have Mexican friend who has been here for years and hasn’t learned any Catalan beyond ‘Em dic…,’ ‘sisplau’ and ‘molt bé, gràcies.’ etc. In a way, she functions just fine speaking and working only in Spanish, and has a very international group of friends with whom she speaks English or Spanish. But, she doesn’t like Catalans very much anymore. She finds them cold and unfriendly, a- bit provincially minded, and self-involved. As for myself, I only speak a basic level of Catalan (which didn’t take me very long to learn) and find them overall to be super friendly, super cool, and very open. Cold and unfriendly definitely hasn’t been my experience. I barely speak any Spanish here; not with friends, and not while I do errands in the city. I can’t help but wonder if there is an obvious relationship between my aforementioned friend’s attitude to the Catalan language, and their attitude toward her.

Plus, for you, I’d be careful with such a cavalier way of thinking; The IaaC receives a good part of its funding from the Generalitat de Catalyunia, meaning: my Catalan speaking friends are subsidizing your tuition (a foreigner who has no record of contributing tax revenue here, and has no obligation to do so in the future.) Is it true, you are already saying “forget Catalan.”? I’m with Medit: show some respect.

lol...ok... i know sometimes writing online may seem more rude than it actually is...

I was jusst telling the guy (who seem to be an english mother tongue) that he will manage a'right with only spanish, in an attempt to not scare him and invite him to go to Barcelona which i consider a very beautifull city, and that is because of the physical place and ppl, i've have been in barcelona before, and i have catalan friends, and i have to admitt i dunno any catalan, but im not trying to "not learn" catalan, and ur right too, maybe im totally mistaken with my comparisson between catalan and basque (euskerra), and im glad u clarified it for me, so, it was never my intention to be "irrespetuoso" i was just trying to get more ppl to visit the place, cause sometime ppl gets scared cause is not easy to learn catalan outside Catalunya and some ppl get the wrong image that they will need catalan to survive in the city....

and im really looking forward to my year in barcelona, and maybe meet u guys that way u will realize how friendly i will be...and i hope to learn some catalan soon....

oh, and im actually not rich...if i was a rich kid (as u say is full of in the IaaC), i will definetly went to the AA, but the IaaC is actually kind of the same price (or less) of what i would had pay for a decent master here in my hometown Mexico....

so, see u soon, los veo pronto and... (i dunno how to say it in catalan)
