Generative Architecture

some person

Here is an experiment that I would like to try... please participate if you are interested.

A few successful threads like .jpg du jour and CD Swap have demonstrated the interactive nature of the Archinect community. More recently, the thread about designboom inspired me to start this thread. Let's see how this turns out.

I'll post an image (we'll call it the "parent" generation), then post an example of "Generation 1." I invite you to download either the parent or Generation 1, alter it in an architectonic way, and re-post it to this thread. You can introduce something from your own image collection or simply re-design the first image. Others who follow can build upon any image (or "generation") from the collection.

Be serendipitous.

Generation 2

Perhaps scale figures would be good...

Now it's your turn...

I knew I went out on a limb when I posted this thread yesterday, however, I'm surprised that no one has commented yet (not even any sarcastic comments...).

Perhaps everyone is diligently working on a new image? Or you are too busy? Or you just don't care?

Or, to quote Will Ferrell in Zoolander, "Am I taking crazy pills?"

Here are a few links for Generative Art (which have inspired Generative Architecture):

nice try DCA. i like the idea, but having to download the image, open it in photoshop, manipulate it, then repost it is just too time consuming. it's all about the interface (think myspace vs friendster). the easier the better. have you thought about writing a simple program to manipulate the image?

dot, I appreciate the comments. I've seen other programs that manipulate images for you. The Generative Art people and the Electric Sheep people do it. However, I think that the computer programs/scripts take the creativity and spontaneity out of design. When you are stretching (for instance) something in Photoshop, your brain guides you to make it the appropriate length.

It really wouldn't take too much time to download, edit, and repost images. But, like you imply, it would patience and dedication.

Yes, Photoshop Tennis is a similar idea. I've always wanted to try it but with architectural images.

Orhan, are you telling me to go to hell? (I hope you meant to post that in a different thread... You had me worried there for a minute.)

DCA, of course not.

it meant to go to another thread where some arrogant people are looking for free labor and telling people to go to hell for an assumed reason.

I think it's a lot to ask DCA. Sorry.

But I love the idea of playing what I call exquisite corpse with architecture, which this is kinda like. Exquisite corpse for those who don't know is like when you were a kid and you folded a piece of paper in thirds, drew a head on the top third, folded it over so someone could draw a torso on the middle third (without seeing the head) and on to the feet in the same manner.

Thanks for the comments, all.

I'm glad someone was willing to play. Here's Generation 2. Anyone up for Generation 3?

For this one, I used DifficultFix's wood image as a starting point and Lego Builder's blue sky for the windows.

And with a scale figure:

Does anyone know how to get rid of the blue bounding box? (I'm trying to follow flickr's rules about hot linking...)

Lego Builder, it looks like the image has some good stuff, but it's hard to see because it's so small... can you try a larger file, perhaps?
