Favorite Architect Websites

James Meyer

Ok so I have finally talked the boss into revamping the center's website, woohoo. BUT now he wants a series of quality examples to look at before he decides on/approves a paticular direction...

So guys what are all of your favorite websites for for any kind of design-eque firm/group.

Ill start off with:
plot.dk [ jds.dk or big.dk ]
lateral architecture
thomas phifer
olsen sunberg

remember this is as much about format as cool shit but hey no complains about more cool shit

don't get me wrong, I think Flash is a great tool. my problem is that Flash, as a medium, seems to be instantly recognizable. 'oh, another Flash website'. It has distinct characteristics which make it obviously recognizable as Flash. the problem is that after a while most websites done with Flash start to look pretty much the same, in terms of general aesthetic.

this baffles me because in most other forms of artistic media, specifically traditional media, ie paint, pencil, charcoal, clay the artist's work is much more distinguishable and for lack of a better word--different.

i don't know the software personally. Is it that restrictive of an application that it's difficult to generate an original output? Everything looks so clean and polished in Flash, which is fine, but what if i want something a little more rugged, something fuzzy and gritty? and i bet this could be done and has been done....maybe you can point me in the direction of some examples.

i'm just concerned about the danger of submitting to the medium's intended capabilities as a limitation, rather than using the medium (Flash) as a tool for artistic vision.

i'm done...just a random thought

wangsta, did you check out the old version? It's somewhere there, i think in one of the notebooks. It's really gritty. Aparently he is really well known in Korea. But being a cracker like myself, he can't read any of his own reviews. Yeah, it's Flash. Maybe you were looking at Inclined Inc which is his other company (links off that page) and is more "normative." I think wangsta is talking about the Flash that has that antialiased, vector look that is clearly Flash being Flash. Not using Flash as a tool to do otherthings, but using Flash to do Flash.

Gotta represent my bros yo. Basically it's his online portfolio. If you notice, it's not so much an information site as it is showing his chops. And I guess it worked because he and his wife/partner took October off to travel Europe. That's right...OCTOBER. hahaha He's definately a talented guy.

Flash is only limited by your imagination. Most people repeat what they see and most people don't know how to use it well, so you see the same thing over and over.
HTML is extremely limited. You can build great sites in it, but you cannot escape it's limitations.

They are both simply tools. It's the designer - talent and skill - that make a good site good, not the tool.

Slick Flash, superb programming

Rules:

1. Don't make me "Click to launch" your website. You're not worth it.

2. Don't make me listen to your shit MP3 collection. Seriously.

3. Don't make me angry. If your interface is so frustrating that I just click "close," your website failed to communicate and is thereby worthless. (ie Xefirotarch)

Despite violating rule number 1, this one is hot. http://www.josephkosinski.com/

mm mygoodness. thats an awesome website. as were some others above

yeah - i tend to believe that flash is becoming over-used. freshly grad'd computer design graphics kids with a load of info and half talent putting up things automatically stored in the 4am receptors of their brain undercutting talented designers prices by a quarter what they'd charge.

beauty is they still try.

i agree digitally branded is cool, but once is enough. was expecting better website links within it, but still nice nonetheless

that miralleblah blah one was not as cool, but just as annoying.

overdesigned websites and flash is so 'nike.' graphic design, i think, is about getting to the point graphically. the future:

Yes yes html is cool and hip, but you realize there's tons of javascript in there - that is to say, not html. But then again you didn't specify html over flash, so my foot's in my mouth. And I'll hit "submit" any way...

But seriously, I do enjoy 2X4, and dot dot dot looks cool too.

I dunno. I can appreciate 2x4s purity and they followed through with the design. However, it's a very trendy approach that I think is already looking very dated (I am guessing this 'style' was new about 2 years ago or so, or at least started showing up EVERYWHERE).

Same goes for dot's site, although I much prefer 2x4s.

They are just a little confusing to me. Show me the pretty pictures. I don't want to try to decipher a 80's text document!

hi freeezerburn, 2by4 are doing a great design-job! ...but the website is super-dutch-oldschool

...the future of (architecture)websites? lets see...

http://www.miloby.com/flash/
http://www.mvrdv.nl/_v2/
http://www.elk-design.com/arch2.htm

..I think clear navigation brings us into a better future...

http://www.firstbornmultimedia.com/ (they did the KPF-site)

here a triple-mint-super-luxury-home(page)

http://www.a-cero.com/

you call this über?

here is the minimal version of a web(!)site ...and still for architects

http://www.nlarchitects.nl/
http://www.99ic.com/ ......are these guys architects?

but actuall I think the "future" needs some content and (up-to-date-) information ...(?)

http://www.onearchitecture.nl/
http://www.spacegroup.no/index3.html
http://www.touraine-richmond.com/
http://www.99ic.com/

(by the way, the last six links are from ex-oma duds)

and this site has really a bad navigation and not much information (but cool architecture)

http://www.deluganmeissl.at/home.php

but remember:

http://www.baunetz.de/arch/ranking/home.html

who is leading the top of the pops? has sombody seen a website of them?

please send me the link ...haha...
