I have to see it just to say I saw it. The front of the building looks very plain and simple. What did you not like about the overall design? Was the detailing good, or did it suck?
Basically, at least to me, it looked like 2-3 good ideas and then it was given to an intern with 0 experience and 0 time to learn. Many things don't even look like they should be legal. It looks like it had a tiny budget, but I am sure it didn't.
If you go, look at the unfinished cuts in the ceiling and the ragged edges where any materials meet, where some poor kid will get cut up eventually.
The big cantilever from the front is cool, especially with all the crap medvilla stuff around there, but that's about all that caught my attention. Oh, that and the $10000 skirt! Shit's just crazy.
Denari's supposed to have something opening somewhere, but that's all I know about it. So if you go, I'd try to find that too.
i believe they had QUITE the budget. i was told the piece of alumn used in the facade, if you noticed - has no seam[s]. it i believe is one of the largest, if not largets ever sheet fabricated in the usa. they also, used the alum on the sides where the sun don't shine - ie where no one will really notice. [ie $$$$+++].and if you sum up the cost of the TS 20 x20 used in the top floor spaning [set 16" o.c. no sh_t!]beneath tthe GLASS ceiling to the LA sun .. -- um, perhaps 20xs redundancy of the steel used and ea. member doing .05% its potential .. not to mention the entrance being OPEN all day - full frontal baby - all that AC into the street - + thats the AC that is running to keep the blg cool w. that glass ceiling so all those mid 50's divorcees can stay calm cool + collected whilst look utterly adorable in the black spaceman prada outfits they're zipping into as they get vertigo fr spinning in the delayed mirror rooms ---.
the store rocks ! scale much better + more intimate than nyc.
detailing much tighter as well i thought - nice precedent to lay out ..
The detailing was better than you expected? Wow, must have had low expectations!
Funny you should mention the aluminum...while I was there, with other arch friends, we couldn't help but notice how nothing lined up. Like the mullions didn't line up with the seams on the floor, or the glass didn't line up with the canti roof - basically it looked like they had x spacing and just forgot that the site was wider, then slapped an extra few feet on the side to fit it. They could have at least coordinated the pieces!
Then there is the ADA stuff, like a truss that will knock you out if you aren't careful and rectangular handrails!
went to the PRADA opening...very UNDERwhelming when compared to the Prada store in Tokyo...now that store is amazing...come to think of it, all stores in Tokyo are amazing!
Brent, you are refering to the H + M building? That is amazing! I was never a huge fan of theirs, but over the years they continue to impress and challenge their abilities. Remarkable, I think.
Sorry, I can't say that for Rem. And no, we don't need more Meier's, but a well built building, especially considering the budget, does not seem too much to expect. Perhaps they should have taken a look at Meier's Radio and Television Museum just up the street (one of his better ones).
Prada Beverly Hills
I just saw the Prada store in BHs. Very disappointing, to say the least.
Anyone else see it?
going to the opening next week........
oops - sorry - got that mixed up with the Etro opening next week.....

It sucked beyond belief!
