We're about to upgrade from 2000 to 2004. If you get an answer to your plotting question, does it apply to 2004?

what is the purpose .stb instead of .ctb?.. does .stb allow you to print with gradient colors?

.ctb is more like a traditional color=pen width regardless of the layer the element is on.
.stb is for plot styles which assign pen widths to color as above, except the styles are assigned to layers..like a pen set of assorted widths for each layer.
Red and Yellow can be the same width, if drawn on different layers. Likewise, two red lines can be different pen weights if drawn on seperate layers.
You didn't have that with the .pc2 w/R14.
