a companion and i were having a conversation about portfolios. i have been putting a first draft together and we were looking through it together. i dont have much process that leads up to each project shown at all. there is some analysis and some diagraming but no real process models or trash paper sketches.
my question is, how important is process in a grad school app. portfolio. site analysis, diagrams, bass wood and chip board models, etc. how important are all of these to the goal of the portfolio? is it about a final impression, or do they really try to see where you come from in your design process?
They look through a ton of portfolios so they are not going to determine your process of each project. It really is about putting in what looks best as superficial as it seems. Process is important, but if it looks bad it will do more harm than good. I had some process work in my portfolio but it was mostly finished work.
Process is important, but even most published work doesn't show process, or if it does, it is most for graphics than information.
also remember that it never hurts to go back and do that one diagram that you never got to. As long as the overarching concept of the project is clear you should be just fine and remember sex(y images) sells
