I am a first year graduate student looking for an internship this summer. What is a good place to start and how should I go about contacting firms? I know there are several different ways of doing this, but what seems to work the best?
Nowadays, having a personal reference is a definite strength. If you are still in school, ask some faculty members if they know of any firms that are hiring or what firms historically hire students from your school. I think that is the best place to start. Also, if you have friends currently working at a firm you're interested in, ask them if there are openings, I've seen many people hired that way.
