India and Bangladesh Trip

4haus

Hi there,

Am heading soon to India/ Bangladesh for a month or so and was looking for anyones experiences of architecture/ urbanism/ culture that they may wish to suggest. Apart from the obvious chandigarh, dhaka assembly etc. does anyone have any hidden gems old or new that they would recommend?

Am interested in any good vernacluar stuff too.

Cheers

I have some suggestions for Bangladesh trip..

for the interest in historic architecture:

Visit Paharpur Budhdhist Monastery : the biggest and the oldest one in the whole world. 4 hrs bus drive from Dhaka.

Visit Old Dhaka in a rickshaw ! enjoy the old Mughal Monuments and the people.

For Colonial architecture : Visit Dhaka University Campus Carzon Hall and Panam Nagar ( 1 hr Bus drive from Dhaka).

For Modern Architecture : Visit Fine Arts institute in Dhaka University designed by Muzharul Islam.

Old Dhaka and Paharpur must see.

To get a taste of the city beforehand check out Raymond Meiers Photography on Dhaka http://www.louiskahndhaka.com/

If you have questions u can email me.

Have a nice trip!!

In India, I'd surely head to the following places:

Ahmedabad
-the IIM campus by Louis Kahn
-the 4-odd buildings by Corb.
-the architecture school that has a whole wealth of information about indian architecture
-The beautiful old city with its narrow streets and amazing food spots

Jaisalmer
The fort and the village inside the fort are very beautiful

Bombay
-For the crazy fast life - it really defines the cliche 'life in the fast lane'
-All the small and medium sized markets and shopping centers
-The 'Kanchenjunga' apartments by Charles Correa

Bangalore
-The IIM Bangalore campus
-The hundreds of cool bars and pubs that line the streets

New Delhi
-The India Habitat Center
-Charles Correas LIC building in Connaught place
-To find the definition of 'high density sprawl'

Just returned from India two months ago. Would strongly recommend:

Ahmedabad (sameolddoctor names some of the major sights there)
-there is an immense wealth to see in Ahmedabad and it is sadly underrated. Included significant modern architecture and traditional indian works:
-Ghandi Labour Institute, Doshi
-Ni Gufa, Doshi - which may be nearing completion by the time you get there
-Doshi himself at Sangath
-Indology Museum (Doshi & Corb)
-Corb's Textile Millowner's Building (similar to Carpenter Centre)-Shodan House, Corb
-City Museum (aka Sanskar Kendra), Corb
-Sarabhai Villa, Corb
-Ancient Stepwells outside of Ahmedabad (Adalaj, Patan) are breathtaking in their dramatic light conditions
-ofcourse, IIM is unconditionally the most important building to experience...

4haus, if you want more information I would love to discuss/send images/sketches.

cheers

Thanks guys,

Some of those i had pinpointed some not so thats great.

Olly, do you mean you can actually meet Doshi at Sangath? (did you) i think he is a legend (if going a bit off the rails with the Ni Gufa domed thing).

If you have directions to the more obscure or difficult stuff to find in Ahmedebad ( i.e. Ancient Stepwells) would appreciate it. sketches etc would also be cool.my email is ciandeegan@gmail.com

cheers
