hope everyone's doing well. i was wondering if anyone can recommend any good books to read on urban design in preparation for master's in arch & urban design?
hopefully, i will be going to nyc for my master's. i was thinking of reading something along the lines of rem's delirious new york, and/ or the ecological urbanism. would you recommend those books? i had an urban design studio at my undergrad, so i although i'm still kinda new to urban design, it's not a total unchartered teritory for me. i also did a few of masterplanning projects for work.
in my opinion there is a bit of waffling around in the field of urban studies. However I do recommend good old rem's Delirious NY, for more stuff by the same author, the Generic City and Junkspace are a must. I also recommend The Death and Life of great america Cities (JAne Jacobs) and Learning from Las vegas by Steven Izenour, Denise Scott born and her husband Robert Venturi.
I think that's enough to make a library nerd of yourself this summer! Enjoy ;)
also would reccomend "the geography of nowhere" it's funny and gives a good history of the suburbs in the U.S. Easy read. Good book to get you aquainted with the history, politics, and cultural forces that govern urbanism. Not much in the way of design solutions, and a bit biased toward new-urbanism, but def. worth reading.
"collage city" is a must in my opinion!
Also, I recomend the film koyonisquatsi. small commitment on a boring night, 2hours of images that will really get you thinking about the big picture. Its on youtube in full.
