I will graduate this summer (yey!). And I am planning to do internship in NYC for a year this June.
But, I have a very little knowledge about the city. FYI, I'm Indonesian, I 've stayed in LA for 4.5 years. I once visited NYC 4 years ago for a week vacation.
Can anybody help me with the affordable housing information in NYC? As for the area, I'm planning to be intern at OMA, BIG, REX, or Diller Scoffidio; so anywhere close to those offices will be great!
I think it would be better if you secure the job/internship first and then find housing.
That said, NYC is not cheap - try to find sublets or room shares. You can try to find places where there are lots of students living (such as Upper West - Columbia) or away from Manhattan such as Brooklyn. I like to use padmapper to search for places - they give you the locations of the places fairly accurately.
You can't really just "plan" on being an intern if you want, there are probably hundreds of kids applying to be interns at those firms. And if you aren't physically attractive and/or have an Ivy degree your chances might diminish.
First secure the internship, then look at housing in brooklyn. you should choose your apartment based on what subways/train lines run through your neighborhood. You want a short commute to work if you're coming home at 10pm
@RZTZ i've gotten jobs at two of the firms listed above without them seeing my face before making an offer. a lot of people within those offices did not come from ivy league schools (neither do i).
@Gunawan if you look on craigslist for new york city, there are about 200 new postings for apartments each day. there's a huge amount of offer and it's easy to find a place in ny. it takes a bit longer to find the perfect place but you would need to do that from within the city anyway. plan a budget of about 800-900 USD for rent. cheapest you can get in decent location is about 700. definitely get a job before planning housing. good luck!
I am inside New york frequently regarding company, and quite often after i 'm here i take pleasure in some female lasting love. Let me frequently make use of an visit here to find a perfect young lady. Once i readily escort organization, I always go along with Top-notch NYC
